Your numbers check out. Two things change how to read them, though. The margin drop wasn’t a Q1 event: it had already happened by Q4 FY26. And you’ve captured two of the four MSEDCL empanelments this financial year. Management did explain the margin on the call. I found no disclosure on how much empanelment value has turned into work orders.
Your two open questions
How management explained the margin
| PointWhat was said | |
| Causes | Margins are under pressure from inflated raw material costs, and lower realisation on some orders is hurting profitability; elevated logistics costs were also cited |
| Nature | Management linked the input-cost pressure to geopolitical tensions and called it temporary, not structural. On the call, the chairman said he expects a margin correction as raw material prices fall, and pointed to the dollar |
| Floor | The company sees the current ~10% margin as the bottom |
| Targets | EBITDA margin of 12–13% over the next 2–3 years, with improvement expected from Q2 FY27; ₹5,000 crore revenue in three years |
| Lever | Backward integration into cells and modules could add about 3 percentage points of EBITDA margin at full operation; the 0.5 GW DCR module line was expected to be commissioned by September 2026 |
| Hedging | The company does not currently hedge raw material price volatility Shakti Pumps (India) Ltd (BOM:531431) Q1 2027 Earnings Call Highlights: Strong Revenue Growth ... +8 |
Work-order conversion: I found nothing disclosed. The structure explains why. An empanelment is a rate contract, not an order. When Shakti described a December 2024 MSEDCL empanelment, it said it would receive a series of orders over the following year, with the 60-day execution clock starting from each work order. So revenue from your ₹348 crore will arrive in tranches, and the only clues will be order-book updates. business-standard
Corrections to your notes
| Your noteCorrection | |
| Volume up, margin more than halved | True year on year, but Q4 FY26 EBITDA margin was already 9.7%. Q1 was flat quarter on quarter. The collapse happened by Q4. |
| Two MSEDCL empanelments | Four so far in FY27. You’re missing 6,580 pumps at ₹155.24 crore incl. GST (₹142.55 crore ex-GST), reported in early May and 15,000 pumps at ₹324.96 crore ex-GST / ₹353.89 crore incl. GST, filed 4 July |
| PAT up 35% QoQ | EBITDA was flat, so the entire improvement came from below the EBITDA line (table below) |
| EV subsidiary total ₹80 crore | The cumulative figure was ₹70 crore during Q1. ₹70 + ₹5 = ₹75 crore, so either there was another tranche or the ₹80 crore figure is off |
| 27,678 installations | One call summary says 27,608. The press release says 27,678, so this is probably a typo SHAKTIPUMP 24072026211955 LetterResultReleaseQ1FY27 +4 |
The math
A. Q1 bridge (₹ crore)
| Q4 FY26Q1 FY27Change | |||
| Revenue | 857.77 | 858.67 | +0.1% |
| EBITDA | 83.2 | 82.9 | −0.4% |
| PAT | 38.33 | 51.59 | +34.6% www.jmfinancialservices.in +2 |
Q1 PBT build: EBITDA 82.9 + other income 10.3 − depreciation 7.6 − finance cost 14.6 = 71.0. That matches the reported ₹71.05 crore. The aggregator labels these figures in crore, but they only reconcile as ₹ million, so I’ve converted them. Other income was up from 19 to 103 (₹ million) year on year, which is about 14.5% of PBT. A meaningful share of the profit bounce isn’t operating. jmfinancialservicesaskfuzz
B. How big the margin gap is, and price vs cost
| StepCalculationResult | ||
| EBITDA at last year’s 23.1% margin | 858.67 × 23.1% | ₹198.4 cr |
| Actual EBITDA | ₹82.9 cr | |
| Quarterly shortfall | 198.4 − 82.9 | ₹115.5 cr |
| Solar revenue per pump, Q1 FY27 | ₹685.1 cr (+51.3%) ÷ 27,678 | ₹2.475 lakh |
| Solar revenue per pump, Q1 FY26 | (685.1 ÷ 1.513) ÷ 17,557 | ₹2.579 lakh |
| Realisation change | −4.0% | |
| Revenue lost to lower realisation | 27,678 × (2.579 − 2.475) lakh | ₹28.7 cr |
| Share of shortfall from price | 28.7 ÷ 115.5 | ~25% powerpeakdigest |
So roughly three-quarters of the gap is cost or mix, not price. This is a rough split: segment revenue isn’t purely installations, and mix shifts move the per-pump figure.
C. MSEDCL rate card
| FiledPumps₹ cr ex-GST₹ lakh/pump | |||
| Apr/May | 6,580 | 142.55 | 2.166 |
| 4 Jul | 15,000 | 324.96 | 2.166 |
| 9 Sep | 10,000 | 216.64 | 2.166 |
| 6 Oct | 4,755 | 103.01 | 2.166 |
| Total | 36,335 | 787.16 | 2.166 |
The per-pump price is identical across all four. The rate was fixed before or during the input-cost spike and hasn’t been reset. These orders add volume, but they lock in today’s cost structure unless input costs fall. At ₹2.17 lakh, they are also about 12.5% below Q1’s average solar realisation of ₹2.475 lakh, likely because these are smaller 3–7.5 HP pumps.
D. Coverage and what the guidance implies
| ItemCalculationResult | ||
| Order-book coverage (22 Jul) | 1,000 ÷ 858.7 | 1.16 quarters (~3.5 months) |
| Including Sep + Oct empanelments (upper bound) | (1,000 + 319.65) ÷ 858.7 | 1.54 quarters |
| Margin path | 9.6% + ~3 pp backward integration | ~12.6% |
| Target EBITDA | 5,000 × 12.5% | ₹625 cr/yr vs ₹332 cr Q1 annualised (1.9x) |
| P/E on Q1 run-rate at ₹449 (6 Oct) | 449 ÷ (4.2 × 4) | ~26.7x |
The margin row matters most. Backward integration alone gets you to the 12–13% target. So the guidance doesn’t assume raw-material relief, and it doesn’t assume a return to 23%. “Temporary” is the language, but the plan treats about 12.5% as the new normal. The upper-bound coverage assumes nothing was executed after 22 July, and I don’t know whether the July empanelment was already in the ₹1,000 crore.
My read
The story has shifted from growth to margin repair. Q1 shows the decline stopped but didn’t reverse, and the profit bounce came from below the operating line. The new Maharashtra orders keep volumes up at a fixed rate, so they don’t fix margins by themselves. Recovery depends on the DCR module line and input costs.
The risk your notes don’t cover is receivables. Only 42% of receivables were “not due” as of 30 June, which by subtraction means about 58% were overdue. Payment issues under PM-KUSUM 2.0 were also flagged as affecting cash flow. The AA- rating speaks to debt servicing, not to that. sahiYahoo Finance
The market has repriced accordingly: ₹449 on 6 October, below the ₹456.35 low of 30 March 2026 and down from ₹979 in July 2025. This is analysis, not a buy or sell call; I’m not a financial advisor. angeloneaskfuzz
What to check in Q2 results. No date is announced yet; last year’s Q2 results came on 7 November 2025. nseindia
