Rs 500, Rs 1000 ban: Govt extends use of old notes for public utilities payments by 72 hrs

The notes can be used for utility services like water and electricity bills.

Central Government on Friday extended the time period to use old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes for public utility bills by another 72 hours. Earlier, the use of these notes was allowed till November 11, i.e Friday midnight. The notes can be used for utility services like water and electricity bills.  “Such old notes to be accepted for payment of utility charges like water and electricity till November 11 midnight. Records to be maintained,” Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das had said in a tweet. Old Rs 500 and 1,000 notes will also be accepted for payment of fees, charges, taxes, and penalty to central and state governments, including municipalities and local bodies, Das had tweeted. Government has taken-up a number of measures to lessen the ordeal faced by general public after the abolishment of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. Besides this, the notes will be accepted across all the government hospitals in the country. The time period of free-passage through toll plazas  has also been extended by another 72 hours. i.e. till November 14.

 

“To ensure smooth traffic movement across all National Highways, the toll suspension has been extended till 14th November midnight,” Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari said in a Tweet. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday appeared on television, and declared the bank notes of Rs. 500 and Rs 1000 as illegal tenders. Modi, in his address, said that the decision will create momentary trouble for the general public, but its effect will be significant. The decision has drawn mixed reactions from general public. While leaders like Rahul GandhiP Chidambaram, Mamta Banerjee criticised the decision, some like Bihar CM Nitish Kumar come out in support of it.
