U.S. stocks rose for a third day as energy shares rallied and speculation grew that the European Central Bank will provide more stimulus. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (SPX) rose 0.5 percent to 2,032.12 in New York. The gauge has advanced 2 percent over the past three days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 39.05 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,554.28.Tthe Nasdaq Composite added 20.46 points, or 0.44 percent, to 4,654.85. The Russell 2000 Index dropped 0.3 percent.
Emerging-market stocks jumped to a six-week high as China extended a rebound and investors wagered that the European Central Bank will take steps to boost growth. The MSCI Emerging Markets Index advanced 2 percent to 976.07, the highest level since Dec. 8.
Oil rebounded from the biggest drop in a week amid signs that prices near a 5 1/2-year low are slowing drilling in the U.S. West Texas Intermediate for March delivery gained $1.31, or 2.8 percent, to close at $47.78 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent for March settlement climbed $1.04, or 2.2 percent, to end at $49.03 a barrel on the London-based ICE Futures Europe exchange.
