Share it on Facebook5 Vegetables for good health
TNN | Oct 11, 2011, 12.00AM IST
While everyone knows that green vegetables are good for the body, most of us tend to still avoid eating them.
Consuming veggies need not be a chore. With the wide variety available, you can easily find one to suit your tastes. Here we suggest some top green vegetables that can do your health wonders.
Broccoli
Broccoli is considered a wonder food for its ability to help prevent cancer. The vegetable is recommended for those suffering from heart disorders and strokes. Being packed with iron its ideal for anaemia patients as well. Boil or steam your broccoli flowers lightly and eat so that they don't lose all the nutrients.
Cabbage
Whether consumed raw or cooked in a dish, cabbage has many benefits. It is said to be great for the skin and eyes as its full of vitamin A. The phytonutrients present in this vegetable help the body fight against the free radicals. It also helps with lung, stomach and colon prostate cancer. Those interested in body building may want to eat cabbage as its full
of iodine that is needed for muscle development.
Bean sprouts
Sprinkled on salads or eaten as a between meals snack, sprouts are a great way of getting some nutrients. They are rich in vitamin C and a handful of fresh sprouts can provide you with three-quarters of your daily vitamin C requirement. In addition they also contain vitamins A, B and E as well as calcium, iron, and potassium.
Spinach
You can be sure if Popeye loved this food, you should be consuming it too. The vegetable contains carotenoid that help prevent cancer. It's also loaded with vitamins like C and A that helps with god eyesight and glowing skin. The high level of potassium makes it very beneficial for high blood pressure patients. Further it strengthens muscles and helps those suffering from anaemia.
Lettuce
Depending on the variety, the nutrients in lettuce vary. Romaine lettuce is said to be the most healthy one boasting of vitamins A, B, and C, folic acid, manganese and chromium. It makes for an excellent salad as it is low in calories. Lettuce is also a good source of iron which helps with blood formation. It also has magnesium, vital for the brain and the nerves.
Mobile phone users are increasingly suffering from a new condition, dubbed ‘text neck’, due to the amount of time they spend hunched over the gadgets, say experts.
According to them, the affliction, caused by flexing the neck for extended periods of time, can be a forerunner of arthritic damage if it goes without treatment. In severe cases, it may get painful to even straighten the neck out properly.
“Keeping the neck and head stretched forwards for long periods could eventually cause the natural curvature of the neck to reverse, potentially leading to serious health problems,” The Daily Telegraph quoted Rachael Lancaster, of Freedom Back Clinics in Leeds, as saying.
Children are most at risk as their heads are larger in relation to their body size than adults. Women with slender necks should also be careful about their posture. However, experts say that text neck can be avoided by taking regular screen breaks, and looking straight ahead while tucking the chin back towards the neck every few minutes. Also, by doing regular neck and shoulder exercises, one can avoid such health related problem.
Daily dose of ginger may cut the risk of cancer. New research finds that ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties may play a role in reducing colon cancer risk.
The study, published in Cancer Prevention Research, found a link between daily ginger supplements and a reduction of inflammation in the colon, which researchers suggest is one step toward better understanding the role ginger root might play in preventing colon cancer.
Prior studies in mice and rats have shown that ginger helped prevent the formation of tumours when the animals were exposed to a chemical that causes colon cancer.
For the new study, researchers from the University of Michigan Medical School in the US randomly assigned 30 healthy adults to take capsules containing either 2 gram of powered ginger root (about two tablespoons of ground-up ginger root, noted the researchers) or a placebo powder every day for four weeks.
Before and after the study, the researchers took tissue samples from the lining of the colon. They “tested these samples for chemicals called eicosanoids that increase inflammation in the gut,” stated WebMD, noting that the ginger-eating subjects showed reduced inflammation.Another recent study published in The Lancet found that low doses of aspirin, taken daily and over the long term, cut cases of colorectal cancer by a quarter and the death toll from this disease by a third.
Leftover fruits give you radiant skin
What do you do when you have a whole bunch of leftover fruits and veggies in your refrigerator? As much as we try hard, these leftovers do not seem to get over.
Lemons, tomatoes, papaya, bananas, eggs are a few to name that top the list of leftovers in the fridge. Its time to stop fretting about wastage and the money spent.
We tell you a few ways of using it wisely...
Lemons are very good for hair. Wash your hair with lemons. It is very good for oily and greasy hair. It has excellent nourishing properties like Vitamins B and A. This will take care of the dandruff and get rid of similar scalp problems.
Leftover bananas that changes colour to black are very useful in making your skin glow. Overripe bananas are very high in vitamin A, B and E, all of which benefit the skin. Mash a banana and put it all over your face till it completely dies up and rinse off after 15-20 minutes.
Papayas are good cleansers. It has Enzyme Papain which removes blemishes and rejuvenates an undernourished skin. Mash papayas and mix some honey to make a pack which you can smear all over your hands, neck and face. Wash after 15-20 minutes for a blemish free skin.
Eggs works wonders for skin and hair. Mix egg white with mayo and honey to make a thick paste. This can be applied to your hair as well. Egg has pure protein which will make your hair strong and honey that will bring out the lustre that was till now lacking in your tresses.
So, leftover fruits, vegetables and even poultry can contribute to your healthy skin and hair. Next time you spot something lying in your refrigerator unused, you know what to do.
Watch your diet supplement intake
People who take dietary supplements to boost their intake of minerals may actually be getting too much of a good thing — and even risk serious problems.Garlic
Its stinky sulphuric component, allicin, gives garlic its anti-viral and antibiotic properties. It prevents clogging of arteries, boosts immunity and protects against cancers, particularly of the stomach and colon.
Ginger
Apart from aiding digestion, ginger reduces swelling and pain from arthritis, gastritis and muscle spasms.
Turmeric
Curcumin, the active ingredient that gives turmeric its yellow colour, makes it effective against cancers, infections and inflammatory disorders such as asthma, multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel disease.
Citrus fruits
Vitamin C in amla (Indian gooseberry), oranges and lemons boosts the production of disease-fighting white blood cells (WBC).
Yoghurt
An outstanding source of calcium, protein, riboflavin and vitamin B 12, yoghurt has healthy bacteria that enhances immunity and aids digestion.
Green tea
Polyphenols in green tea busts stress and protect against free radical damage that accelerates ageing.
Yellow/orange veggies
Carrot, sweet potato and pumpkin are high in beta carotene – coverted to vitamin A by the body -- that help in WBC production.
Mushrooms
Mushrooms, especially black ones, have essential minerals such as zinc that make the body’s defence mechanism robust.
Flavonoids
Found in mango, papaya, berries, broccoli and spinach, bioflavenoids protect cells from environment pollutants and toxins.
Omega-3 fatty acids
Nuts, flaxeed and oily fish such as salmon, tuna, sardines, mackerel and trout raise the activity of WBCs.
Researchers have found that green vegetables from bok choy to broccoliare the source of a chemical signal that is important to a fully functioning immune system.
They do this by ensuring that immune cells in the gut and the skin known as intra-epithelial lymphocytes (IELs) function properly.
“After feeding otherwise healthy mice a vegetable-poor diet for two to three weeks, I was amazed to see 70 to 80 percent of these protective cells disappeared,” said Marc Veldhoen of The Babraham Institute in Cambridge.
Those protective IELs exist as a network beneath the barrier of epithelial cells covering inner and outer body surfaces, where they are important as a first line of defense and in wound repair.
Veldhoen’s team found that the numbers of IELs depend on levels of a cell-surface protein called the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), which can be regulated by dietary ingredients found primarily in cruciferous vegetables.
The new work found that mice fed a synthetic diet lacking this key compound experience a significant reduction in AhR activity and lose IELs.
With reduced numbers of these key immune cells, animals showed lower levels of antimicrobial proteins, heightened immune activation and greater susceptibility to injury.
When the researchers intentionally damaged the intestinal surface in animals that didn’t have normal AhR activity, the mice were not as “quick to repair” that damage.
As an immunologist, Veldhoen says he hopes the findings will generate interest in the medical community, noting that some of the characteristics observed in the mice are consistent with those seen in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
The findings were reported online in the journal Cell, a Cell Press publication, on October 13th.
A snapshot of the current thinking in medicine, fitness and lifestyle trends that impact your life.
Coffee boosts mood
Women who regularly drink coffee have a 20% lower risk of depression than nondrinkers. Other sources of caffeine did not offer the same protection against depression, possibly because of their lower levels of caffeine, say researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health.
High levels of caffeine, however, increase anxiety and insomnia, potentially reversing mood-lifting effects.
The Harvard study looked only at women drinking as much as four to six cups a day, and not women drinking greater amounts. But earlier research on caffeine and suicide risk found that risk of suicide decreased progressively up to six or seven cups a day, then increased after eight or
more cups a day.
Mom's to blame
Childhood obesity begins in the womb, a new study has concluded using state-of-the-art technology to monitor fat levels in unborn babies in the UK.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of unborn babies showed that a mother's overweight or obesity during pregnancy caused potentially harmful changes to a baby's fat levels while still in the womb. It led to some babies having similar build up of fat around their abdomen similar to overweight adults.
Common painkillers can raise heart attack risk
Taking daily doses of over-the-counter painkillers raises the risk of heart attacks and stroke by up to 40%. Regular use of diclofenac, a common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), has a two-fifth higher chance of heart attack and stroke. NSAIDs lower temperature, relieve pain and reduce swelling, and are prescribed to treat arthritis, back pain, gout, headaches and flu.
Vioxx, the arthritis drug withdrawn in 2004 since it led to heart attacks, had only a slightly higher risk factor.
Easily embarrased people more trustworthy
If tripping in public or mistaking an overweight woman for a mother-to-be leaves you red-faced, don't feel bad. A new study from the University of California, Berkeley, suggests that people who are easily embarrassed are more trustworthy, likely to be monogamous and generous.
In short, embarrassment can be useful for people seeking cooperative and reliable team members.
Potato, the best bet for your potassium need
Potatoes are the largest and most affordable source of potassium compared to other vegetables or fruit. Just one helping (150 gm) of potatoes contains 110 calories, 620 gm of potassium and provides almost half your daily need of vitamin C (45%), without providing any fat, sodium or cholesterol.
Potassium protects against heart disease, diabetes, obesity and kidney disease. It keeps muscles strong, bowels regular and eliminate irritability, and stress. It also lowers hypertension by protecting against the blood pressure-boosting properties of sodium
Eating a high-fibre diet reduces cholesterol, regulates blood sugar, cancers, obesity, reduces constipation, colitis, colon cancer, and even haemorrhoids. The recommended daily amount for an adult is 20-25 gm a day.
Legumes/Beans/Lentils
Beans have some of the highest amounts of fibre available, with black beans and kidney beans containing with 15 gm of fibre or more per 1 cup serving. With more than 15 grams per single cup serving, lentils are second only to split peas as a vegetable source of fibre.
Flaxseed
In addition to both soluble and insoluble fibre, flaxseed contains omega-3 fatty acids as well as cancer-preventing lignans. Sprinkle ground flaxseed on yoghurt, cereal or salads to add a nutty flavour and a dose of dietary fibre.
Greens
Green leafy vegetables are a great source of iron, beta-carotene and fibre. Just one cup of cooked greens such as spinach, turnip greens and beet greens has 4 to 5 gm of fibre. A medium-sized pear boosts your intake with 5.1 gm. A large apple has 3.3 gm of fibre.
Whole Grain/Bran
Use whole wheat flour, swap regular pasta for whole wheat, which contains approximately 6.2 gm of fibre per 1 cup serving. Just 30 gm of oatmeal contains 12 gm and 30 gm of corn bran contains 22 gm of fibre.
Nuts
Almonds, pistachio and walnuts are not only high in protein, but fibre as well. Raisins contain both soluble and insoluble fiber, and with 5.3 gm per cup, they offer a quick and convenient alternative to boost your intake.
Shake away that extra salt
Eating bland food is not that bad after all, as sodium-laden diets can lead to a host of health problems. But why is cutting back on salt so difficult? America’s National Public Radio (NPR) explores the allure of salty food and sure-fire ways to shake the habit.
Too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease and strokes, yet most people are consuming more than three times the daily minimum requirement of 1,500 mg of sodium a day. Chicago-based chemist and food scientist Kantha Shelke told NPR that one guaranteed method to reduce sodium is to avoid processed foods, since food companies rely heavily on salt for not only flavour but also its ability to prevent spoilage. Or for an even more disciplined approach, try eliminating sodium from your diet completely for three weeks, then gradually adding it back in.
The goal is to “retrain” your palate to be more sensitive to salty foods, noted Shelke. To cut back on salt intake, the Mayo Clinic advises eating fresh fruits and vegetables and using fresh herbs to flavour meals. When dining out, specify that your dish be prepared without salt. Read the label and find out how much sodium a product contains before purchasing it.
Are you a fitness fanatic looking to build your muscles like ‘Popeye the Sailor’? Then consider reaching for the mustard, and not a can of spinach as claimed by the legendary cartoon character, who said “I am strong to the finish because I eat all my spinach”.
A new research has revealed that a steroid, found in the mustard plant, triggers a response similar to anabolic steroids with minimal side effects.
Homobrassinolide produces an anabolic effect, increases appetite and muscle mass along with the number and size of muscle fibres.
“We hope that one day brassinosteroids may provide an effective, natural, and safe alternative for age- and disease-associated muscle loss, or be used to improve endurance and physical performance,” Slavko Komarnytsky, a researcher involved in the work from the Plants for Human Health Institute said.
“Because some plants we eat contain these compounds, like mustards, in the future we may be able to breed or engineer these plants for higher brassinosteroid content, thus producing functional foods that can treat or prevent diseases and increase physical performance,” he stated.
Komarnytsky and his colleagues exposed rat skeletal muscle cells to different amounts of homobrassinolide and measured protein synthesis in cell culture, which resulted in increased protein synthesis and decreased protein degradation in these cells.
Healthy rats then received oral administration of homobrassinolide daily for 24 days and changes in their body weight, food consumption, and body composition were measured using dual-emission X-ray absorptiometry analysis that showed increased lean body mass in treated animals over those who were not treated.
The researchers repeated this study on rats that were fed high protein diet and similar results were observed.
They also used surgically castrated peri-pubertal rat models to examine the ability of homobrassinolide to restore androgen-dependent tissues after androgen deprivation following castration and the results showed increased grip strength and an increase in the number and size of muscle fibers crucial for increased physical performance.
“The temptation is to see this discovery as another quick fix to help you go from fat to fit,” Gerald Weissmann, Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal said .
“And to a very small degree, this may be true. In reality, however, this study identifies an important drug target for a wide range of conditions that cause muscle wasting,” he added.
The results of the study have been published in the FASEB Journal.

Believed to have medicinal value that can cure many ailments such as diabetes, urinary disorders, aid weight loss and digestion, the good-old lauki (bottle gourd) may not be so good after all.
According to scientists, a bitter lauki when consumed with any other juice can be lethal. The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry (MoHWF) has issued an advisory based on recommendations of an expert committee warning people from consuming bitter lauki, or mixing it up with any other juice. The advisory has been issued following cases of serious health problems cropping up after consumption of lauki juice, popularised by Baba Ramdev.
According to Ramdev, lauki juice mixed with aloe vera, amla, karela, jamun, lemon is as an effective ayurvedic remedy for many ailments including diabetes and blood pressure. Following his call for this ayurvedic concoction, lauki juice became the household remedy for many ailments and many even believed it to be a tonic, aid digestion, prevent acidity, prevent urinary disorders, and excessive sodium loss from the body, till a man died last year after consuming lauki juice.
His death led to suspicions about the efficacy and reliability of lauki juice. The matter was even raised in Parliament prompting government to set up an expert committee to examine the issue. Now following an intensive study on the toxicity of the vegetable juices, the Union Health Ministry has said that lauki juice should not be mixed with any juice.
In fact, it has warned people saying lauki should always be tasted first even before being consumed even as vegetable. If found bitter it should be discarded immediately as bitter lauki juice has the potential to be toxic. The same is the case with other fruits and vegetables from the cucumber family as they are believed to have harmful toxins that give bitter taste. And in case there is any discomfort following its consumption, it is best to rush to hospital.
The advisory is based on recommendations of an expert committee comprising of doctors from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The committee was set up to investigate the issue of safety of consumption of lauki juice after a Member of Parliament raised the issue following death of an official with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in June last year. The official had died shortly after consuming lauki juice mixed with karela (bitter gourd) juice to control diabetes. Despite being bitter the official drank the concoction. Earlier this month about 16 trainee of Haryana police fell ill due to food poisoning after eating lauki for dinner.
To the doctors, the expert committee has recommended conducting tests including prothrombin time and platelet counts, serum amylase, blood sugar along with X-Ray chest, ECG, Ultrasound and Endoscopy. Since there is no specific antidote available, the general supportive care such IV fluids/ crystalloids / blood products/ fresh frozen plasma has to be given to maintain the hemodynamics and electrolyte balance.
Are you suffering from hypertension?
Twenty five year old Sourya Mitra, a Delhi-based freelance writer, had been preparing to run a full marathon. For six months, Sourya had been training hard to build his core muscles, eating nutritious food, and had given up drinking. Weeks before the marathon, he visited his general physician (GP) for a routine checkup and was diagnosed with high blood pressure (BP) bordering on hypertension. On being quizzed by his GP about any symptoms he had noticed, Sourya said he had been experiencing palpitation and dizziness but assumed it was because of the excessive training.
Sourya had in fact missed two of the clearest symptoms of the otherwise asymptomatic high blood pressure. He has been on medication since. In his defence, he says, “I always thought the dizziness was because I was training hard. The palpitation did worry me, but I assumed I was too young to have a heart ailment. Now I pop a pill everyday to keep my blood pressure under control. I really wish I had paid attention to my symptoms and not tried to self medicate myself.”
What happened?
High BP in youngsters is the result of a combination of reasons, including lack of adequate exercise, stress, poor eating habits, excessive intake of salt and fatty acids. Also, it’s possible that Sourya was underline hypertensive from childhood, and excessive training only worsened the situation.
Warning signs
Usually, hypertension is asymptomatic, especially in the young. But if you feel your performance dropping at school or work, or feel your concentration suddenly faltering, it should ring a bell in your head. Other symptoms like dizziness, palpitation, headaches and lethargy are also indicators of high blood pressure. High BP will in itself not kill you, but it can lead to organ damage. It also attacks the cardiovascular system, kidneys, eyes and brain.
The solutions
Even though a lot of youngsters suffer from high BP, usually it is not secondary hypertension. This arises out of ailments in the kidney or thyroid glands. Once secondary causes are ruled out, it is a matter of taking medicines and changing your lifestyle to get fit – by inculcating healthier habits like increasing fibre content in diet, exercising and reducing weight. Continue your medication till your BP comes under control and gradually reduce the dose.
Lifestyle choices
It might not sound appealing, but you have to start young. You can eat what you desire – but make sure you complement your diet with fresh vegetables, fruits and fibre. Since stress contributes to hypertension, reduce it by meditating. Exercising is very important; no one is asking you to build packs of muscles, but walking everyday for 20 minutes is ideal.
Also, stop smoking and restrict alcohol consumption to safe levels. Parents should not put stress on kids as that could lead them to develop underline hypertension.

A holiday: Spending a few hours away from laptops, iPads, BlackBerrys and other phones is a great way to relax. Constant use of devices can make people edgy and restless, and it creates irritability and frustration. One can spend a few hours in silence or listening to the sounds of nature. Nowadays, a lot of music for healing and meditation is available. Listening to such music synchronises the body rhythm.
A walk: Natural sunlight and an unhurried walk can cure many anxieties and gives a good perspective to things. A break from the constant hurried pace of rushing around is also a good idea, even if it’s just for a few hour

Common sleeping pills linked to early death
Higher doses also linked to increased risk of cancer
People who take commonly prescribed sleeping pills may be four times
more likely to die prematurely, according to the latest research.
High doses of sleeping pills also increased risk of cancer by about a third,
said the researchers from the Scripps Clinic Viterbi Family Sleep Centre, California,
and the Jackson Hole Centre for Preventative Medicine, Wyoming.
The study, published in the journal BMJ Open, analysed data on more than 10,500 men and women
living in California who took a range of sleeping pills for an average of 2.5 years between 2002
and 2007. Patient survival was then compared with that of over 23,500 people matched for age,
sex and lifestyle but who had not been prescribed sleeping pills over the same period.
The drugs prescribed included benzodiazepines,
such as temazepam and diazepam; non-benzodiazepines,
such as zolpidem, zoplicone, and zaleplon;
barbiturates and sedative antihistamines.
People prescribed up to 18 doses of pills a year were more than 3.5 times as
likely to die as those prescribed none, the study found.
But those prescribed between 18 and 132 doses of pills were more than four times as
likely to do die compared with people who had not been prescribed sleeping pills.
The risk of dying prematurely increased with increasing doses of sleeping pills,
as those taking the most doses (132+ per year) were more than five times as likely to die
as those prescribed none, the researchers found.
Those taking the highest number of doses were also 35 per cent more likely to be diagnosed
with any type of cancer, which could not be explained by pre-existing poor health.
Although the findings showed a statistical association between taking sleeping pills
with an increased risk of death, it still did not establish a cause of death, the researchers said.
They said it might be time to "reconsider whether even the short term use of hypnotics,
as given qualified approval in National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence [NICE] guidance,
is sufficiently safe."
Some 2.8 million prescriptions were dispensed for temazepam and nearly 5.3 million
for zopiclone in England in 2010.
Malcolm Lader, professor of clinical psychopharmacology at the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London,
said people should not panic as a result of the findings, as more studies were needed.
"I agree that these drugs do have problems but I find some of these results quite difficult to accept.
"The main one is that with 18 doses a year you have three times the mortality - that's quite incredible
because you would have people dropping like flies.
"The study needs to be replicated in a different sample and I think we
need to hold judgement until we have further studies.
"What we don't want is people stopping sleeping tablets and then going through
a very disturbing period of insomnia.
"People should discuss this with their GP but should not under any
circumstances stop taking their medication."

HI. SITTING TOO LONG IS BAD
..THERE ARE GOOD NUMBER OF SUCH INFORMATIONS AND ONE GETS CONFUSED WHICH ONE TO FOLLOW AND HOW TO FOLLOW. THERE IS ADDED DOUBTS ABOUT THE TRUTH IN SUCH STATEMENTS. ANYWAY KNOWING SUCH THINGS MAY HELP SOMETIMES.
HI...
Prostate cancer
It's the most common cause of cancer in men, and the second biggest cause of death from cancer after lung cancer. Each year around 37,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 10,000 die from it.
At the start of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, we look at the pros and cons of the prostate specific antigen (PSA) test, which can indicate whether a man has prostate cancer.
Currently, the UK does not have a screening programme for prostate cancer, simply because the PSA test is not reliable enough.
The PSA is the only blood test available which can indicate that a man may have prostate cancer, but it is often positive for men who do not have the disease.
For men without symptoms of prostate cancer, the test can help to identify a fast-growing cancer that needs to treated ASAP, but it can also expose a slow-growing cancer with which the man could have lived without treatment until the end of his life.
For these reasons, the UK National Screening Programme recommends that men over the age of 50 should make an informed decision on whether they wish to be tested or not, after a discussion with their GP.
The PSA is a blood test which measures the level of a protein made by normal cells of the prostate gland. Prostate cancer cells also produce this protein.
PSA levels in the blood naturally increase with age as the prostate gland gets bigger. Raised PSA levels can also occur as a result of a urine infection, ejaculation, vigorous exercise (such as cycling) and other prostate conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatitis in addition to prostate cancer.
If PSA levels are raised, but the prostate gland feels normal during a rectal examination, a doctor may decide to wait and then repeat the test.
If PSA levels are high, further tests - such as a prostate biopsy - may be carried out to determine the cause. Prostate biopsies are carried out under a local anaesthetic. Despite this, some men may find the procedure uncomfortable or embarrassing.
Being at a higher risk of prostate cancer may influence your decision on whether you want to be tested.
Risk factors include:
In its early stages, the symptoms of prostate cancer may not be obvious. But they may include any of the following:

Dangers of eating White Bread
The Swiss government has been aware of the dangers of eating white bread for decades and in order to get i ts populace to stop eating it, Switzerland has placed a tax on the purchase of white bread. The tax money is given to bakers to reduce the price of whole wheat bread to encourage people to switch. The Canadian government passed a law prohibiting the “enrichment” of white bread with synthetic vitamins. Bread must contain the original vitamins found in the grain, not imitations. Essentially, white bread is “dead” bread. Frequently, consumers are not told the truth about this and so called “enriched” flour. Why is the color of white bread so white when the flour taken from wheat is not? It’s because the flour used to make white bread is chemically bleached, just like you bleach your clothes. When you are eating white bread, you are also eating residual chemical bleach.Flour mills use different chemical bleaches, all of which are pretty bad. Here are a few of them: oxide of nitrogen, chlorine, chloride, nitrosyl and benzoyl peroxide mixed with various chemical salts. One bleaching agent, chloride oxide, combined with whatever proteins are still left in the flour, produces alloxan. Alloxon is a poison and has been used to produce diabetes in laboratory animals. Chlorine oxide destroys the vital wheat germ oil. It will also shorten the flour’s shelf life. Good Nutrition: You won’t find it In White Bread In the process of making flour white, half of the good unsaturated fatty acids, that are high in food value, are lost in the milling process alone, and virtually all the vitamin E is lost with the removal of wheat germ and bran. As a result, the remaining flour in the white bread you buy, contains only poor quality proteins and fattening starch. But that is not the whole story as to the loss of nutrients. Scientific Study Has Confirmed What The Swiss Have Known For Years These horrific numbers are the results of a study run by the University of California, College of Agriculture. It is obvious, from what we have learned, that white bread should be avoided. Whole wheat, rye and grain breads made with whole wheat flour is a better way. It is a good idea to always read the labels and never buy foods that contain artificial flavors, colors, bleached flour, preservatives, hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. |

Coming on to 98 years and still earning more than I did in my younger days, people ask me how I manage to do it. They regard me as an expert on longevity. I have pronounced on the subject before; I will repeat it with suitable amendments based on my experience in the past two years.
Earlier I had written that longevity is in one's genes: children of long-living parents are likely to live longer than those born to short-lived parents. This did not happen in my own family. My parents who died at 90 and 94 had five children, four sons and a daughter. The first to go was the youngest of the siblings. Next went my sister who was the fourth. My elder brother who was three years older than me went a couple of years ago. Two of us remain; I, who will soon be 98, and my younger brother, a retired Brigadier three years younger than me and in much better health. He looks after our ancestral property. Nevertheless, I still believe gene is the most important factor in determining one's life-span. More important than analysing longevity is to cope with old age and make terms with it. As we grow older, we are less able to exercise our limbs. We have to devise ways to keep them active. Right into my mid-eighties, I played tennis every morning, did rounds of Lodhi gardens in winter and swam for an hour in summer. I am unable to do this any more. The best way to overcome this handicap is regular massages. I have tried different kinds and was disappointed with the oil drip and smearing of oil on the body. A good massage needs powerful hands going all over one's body from the skull to the toes. I have this done at least once a day or at times twice a day. I am convinced that this has kept me going for so long. Equally important is the need to cut down drastically one's intake of food and drink. I start my mornings with guava juice. It is tastier and more health-giving than orange or any other fruit juice. My breakfast is one scrambled egg on toast. My lunch is usually patli kichri with dahi or a vegetable. I skip afternoon tea. In the evening, I take a peg of single malt whisky. It gives me a false appetite. Before I eat supper, I say to myself "Do not eat too much." I also believe that a meal should have just one kind of vegetable or meat followed by a pinch of chooran. It is best to eat alone and in silence. Talking while eating does not do justice to the food and you swallow a lot of it. For me no more Punjabi or Mughlai food. I find South India idli, sambhar and grated coconut easier to digest and healthier. Never allow yourself to be constipated. The stomach is a storehouse of all kinds of ailments. Our sedentary life tends to make us constipated. Keep your bowels clean however you can: by laxatives, enemas, glycerin suppositories, whatever. Bapu Gandhi fully understood the need to keep bowels clean. Impose strict discipline on your daily routine. If necessary, use a stop-watch. I have breakfast exactly at 6.30 am lunch at noon, drink at 7 pm, supper at 8. Try to develop peace of mind. For this you must have a healthy bank account. Shortage of money can be very demoralising. It does not have to be in crores, but enough for your future needs and possibility of falling ill. Never lose your temper, it takes a heavy toll and jangles one's nerves. Never tell a lie. Always keep your national motto in mind: Satyamev Jayate, only truth triumphs. Give generously. Remember you can't take it with you. You may give to your children, servants or charity. You will feel better. There is joy in giving. Drive out envy of those who have done better than you in life. A Punjabi verse sums up: Rookhi Sookhy Khai kay Thanda Paani Pee Na Veykh paraayee chonparian na Tarssain jee (Eat dry bread and drink cold water Pay no heed or envy those who smear their chapattis with ghee) Do not conform to the tradition of old people spending time in prayer and long hours in places of worship. That amounts to conceding defeat. Instead take up a hobby like gardening, growing bonsai, helping children of your neighbourhood with their homework. A practice which I have found very effective is to fix my gaze on the flame of candle, empty my mind of everything, but in my mind repeat Aum Shanti, Aum Shanti, Aum Shanti. It does work. I am at peace with the world. We can't all be Fawja Singh who at 100 run a marathon race but we can equal him in longevity and creativity. I wish all my readers long, healthy lives full of happiness. Thanks. Kushwant Singh |
