How to get a glowing complexion
A low-carb diet helps clear acne, says a new study. Here’s how to work your way to a  glowing complexion.
Tried out experimenting with every single lotion and potion and yet, a clean, acne free complexion seems like a distant dream? Changing your diet might help you get rid of those damned zits, says a new study. Health portal WebMD News reported that low-carb eating can help clear up acne by controlling glucose levels, which can lead to a healthier complexion.
People with acne may have what is called hyperinsulinemia, which is characterised by excess levels of insulin in the blood. “Foods that are low in the glycemic index (GI) may contribute to the hormonal control of acne,” said Alan R Shalita, MD, chairman of the department of dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York in an interview with WebMD.

“I would encourage patients with acne to moderate the amount of carbs that they eat and not to overdo dairy, as that can also cause acne,” he added. Selecting foods lower on the glycemic index means avoiding blood sugar spikes with white rice, sweets, and white flour breads and opting for fresh foods, such as vegetables, meat, and fruits.
Shalita also debunked the myth that chocolate triggers blemishes, noting that for people who do react to chocolate, it is more a result of the sugar and fat in the candy. If you have mild to moderate acne, Shalita recommends applying an over-the-counter salicylic acid cleanser followed by a benzoyl peroxide leave-on product to help dry the skin. “If that doesn’t help, see a dermatologist,” he suggests. Other treatments for more severe acne include oral or topical antibiotics.
Dietary changes that help combat acne:
Eating purple and red fruits such as pomegranate, strawberries, black grapes and beetroot can help clear up acne. Have the fruits in form of a salad or as freshly pressed juice.

Green tea is loaded with anti-oxidants and helps fight acne.

Certain green leafy vegetables such as spinach and lettuce also helps clear up the complexion. These vegetables have inflammation fighting nutrients that restrict acne flare-up.

Multigrain breads and chapattis can also stop your sugar levels from shooting up and thereby control acne.

Avoid pastries and cookies as they have high sugar content.

A diet that’s high on dairy products also flare up acne.

If you have an acne prone skin, it’s always good to avoid carbonated drinks and alcohol.

Certain oils such as corn oil or sunflower oil can also aggravate acne.

Mobile phone users are increasingly suffering from a new condition, dubbed ‘text neck’, due to the amount of time they spend hunched over the gadgets, say experts.

According to them, the affliction, caused by flexing the neck for extended periods of time, can be a forerunner of arthritic damage if it goes without treatment. In severe cases, it may get painful to even straighten the neck out properly.

“Keeping the neck and head stretched forwards for long periods could eventually cause the natural curvature of the neck to reverse, potentially leading to serious health problems,” The Daily Telegraph quoted Rachael Lancaster, of Freedom Back Clinics in Leeds, as saying.

Children are most at risk as their heads are larger in relation to their body size than adults. Women with slender necks should also be careful about their posture. However, experts say that text neck can be avoided by taking regular screen breaks, and looking straight ahead while tucking the chin back towards the neck every few minutes. Also, by doing regular neck and shoulder exercises, one can avoid such health related problem.

Daily dose of ginger may cut the risk of cancer. New research finds that ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties may play a role in reducing colon cancer risk.

The study, published in Cancer Prevention Research, found a link between daily ginger supplements and a reduction of inflammation in the colon, which researchers suggest is one step toward better understanding the role ginger root might play in preventing colon cancer.

GingerPrior studies in mice and rats have shown that ginger helped prevent the formation of tumours when the animals were exposed to a chemical that causes colon cancer.

For the new study, researchers from the University of Michigan Medical School in the US randomly assigned 30 healthy adults to take capsules containing either 2 gram of powered ginger root (about two tablespoons of ground-up ginger root, noted the researchers) or a placebo powder every day for four weeks.

Before and after the study, the researchers took tissue samples from the lining of the colon. They “tested these samples for chemicals called eicosanoids that increase inflammation in the gut,” stated WebMD, noting that the ginger-eating subjects showed reduced inflammation.Another recent study published in The Lancet found that low doses of aspirin, taken daily and over the long term, cut cases of colorectal cancer by a quarter and the death toll from this disease by a third.

Watch your diet supplement intake

People who take dietary supplements to boost their intake of minerals may actually be getting too much of a good thing — and even risk serious problems.

According to a U.S. study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, people who take dietary supplements also tend to get more nutrients from their food than those who don’t take supplements — suggesting that vitamins may be taken by the people who need them least.

In some cases, supplement users may actually be overloading on minerals, such as iron, that can cause potentially serious health problems, researchers said. “People need to choose supplements to help meet, but not exceed, the recommended daily intake levels,” said Regan Bailey, a nutrition research at the National Institutes of Health, who led the study.

Men and women who reported using dietary supplements containing eight important minerals — calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, copper, potassium and selenium — were much less likely to be getting inadequate amounts of those minerals from the foods they ate than were people who said they didn’t take supplements, the study found.

The link was strongest for women, who are more likely than men to take supplements

Green veggies help improve body’s immune defences

ANI / Friday, October 14, 2011 15:08 IST

Researchers have found that green vegetables from bok choy to broccoliare the source of a chemical signal that is important to a fully functioning immune system.

They do this by ensuring that immune cells in the gut and the skin known as intra-epithelial lymphocytes (IELs) function properly.

“After feeding otherwise healthy mice a vegetable-poor diet for two to three weeks, I was amazed to see 70 to 80 percent of these protective cells disappeared,” said Marc Veldhoen of The Babraham Institute in Cambridge.

Those protective IELs exist as a network beneath the barrier of epithelial cells covering inner and outer body surfaces, where they are important as a first line of defense and in wound repair.

Veldhoen’s team found that the numbers of IELs depend on levels of a cell-surface protein called the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), which can be regulated by dietary ingredients found primarily in cruciferous vegetables.

The new work found that mice fed a synthetic diet lacking this key compound experience a significant reduction in AhR activity and lose IELs.

With reduced numbers of these key immune cells, animals showed lower levels of antimicrobial proteins, heightened immune activation and greater susceptibility to injury.

When the researchers intentionally damaged the intestinal surface in animals that didn’t have normal AhR activity, the mice were not as “quick to repair” that damage.

As an immunologist, Veldhoen says he hopes the findings will generate interest in the medical community, noting that some of the characteristics observed in the mice are consistent with those seen in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

The findings were reported online in the journal Cell, a Cell Press publication, on October 13th.

A snapshot of the current thinking in medicine, fitness and lifestyle trends that impact your life.

Coffee boosts mood

Women who regularly drink coffee have a 20% lower risk of depression than nondrinkers. Other sources of caffeine did not offer the same protection against depression, possibly because of their lower levels of caffeine, say researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health.

High levels of caffeine, however, increase anxiety and insomnia, potentially reversing mood-lifting effects.

The Harvard study looked only at women drinking as much as four to six cups a day, and not women drinking greater amounts. But earlier research on caffeine and suicide risk found that risk of suicide decreased progressively up to six or seven cups a day, then increased after eight or
more cups a day.

Mom's to blame

Childhood obesity begins in the womb, a new study has concluded using state-of-the-art technology to monitor fat levels in unborn babies in the UK.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of unborn babies showed that a mother's overweight or obesity during pregnancy caused potentially harmful changes to a baby's fat levels while still in the womb. It led to some babies having similar build up of fat around their abdomen similar to overweight adults.

Common painkillers can raise heart attack risk

Taking daily doses of over-the-counter painkillers raises the risk of heart attacks and stroke by up to 40%. Regular use of diclofenac, a common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), has a two-fifth higher chance of heart attack and stroke. NSAIDs lower temperature, relieve pain and reduce swelling, and are prescribed to treat arthritis, back pain, gout, headaches and flu.

Vioxx, the arthritis drug withdrawn in 2004 since it led to heart attacks, had only a slightly higher risk factor.

Easily embarrased people more trustworthy

If tripping in public or mistaking an overweight woman for a mother-to-be leaves you red-faced, don't feel bad. A new study from the University of California, Berkeley, suggests that people who are easily embarrassed are more trustworthy, likely to be monogamous and generous.

In short, embarrassment can be useful for people seeking cooperative and reliable team members.

Potato, the best bet for your potassium need

Potatoes are the largest and most affordable source of potassium compared to other vegetables or fruit. Just one helping (150 gm) of potatoes contains 110 calories, 620 gm of potassium and provides almost half your daily need of vitamin C (45%), without providing any fat, sodium or cholesterol.

Potassium protects against heart disease, diabetes, obesity and kidney disease. It keeps muscles strong, bowels regular and eliminate irritability, and stress. It also lowers hypertension by protecting against the blood pressure-boosting properties of sodium

Top 5 high fibre foods

Eating a high-fibre diet reduces cholesterol, regulates blood sugar, cancers, obesity, reduces constipation, colitis, colon cancer, and even haemorrhoids. The recommended daily amount for an adult is 20-25 gm a day.

Legumes/Beans/Lentils
Beans have some of the highest amounts of fibre available, with black beans and kidney beans containing with 15 gm of fibre or more per 1 cup serving. With more than 15 grams per single cup serving, lentils are second only to split peas as a vegetable source of fibre.

Flaxseed
In addition to both soluble and insoluble fibre, flaxseed contains omega-3 fatty acids as well as cancer-preventing lignans. Sprinkle ground flaxseed on yoghurt, cereal or salads to add a nutty flavour and a dose of dietary fibre.

Greens
Green leafy vegetables are a great source of iron, beta-carotene and fibre. Just one cup of cooked greens such as spinach, turnip greens and beet greens has 4 to 5 gm of fibre. A medium-sized pear boosts your intake with 5.1 gm. A large apple has 3.3 gm of fibre.

Whole Grain/Bran
Use whole wheat flour, swap regular pasta for whole wheat, which contains approximately 6.2 gm of fibre per 1 cup serving. Just  30 gm of oatmeal contains 12 gm and 30 gm of corn bran contains 22 gm of fibre.

Nuts
Almonds, pistachio and walnuts are not only high in protein, but fibre as well. Raisins contain both soluble and insoluble fiber, and with 5.3 gm per cup, they offer a quick and convenient alternative to boost your intake.

Shake away that extra salt

Eating bland food is not that bad after all, as sodium-laden diets can lead to a host of health problems. But why is cutting back on salt so difficult? America’s National Public Radio (NPR) explores the allure of salty food and sure-fire ways to shake the habit.

Too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease and strokes, yet most people are consuming more than three times the daily minimum requirement of 1,500 mg of sodium a day. Chicago-based chemist and food scientist Kantha Shelke told NPR that one guaranteed method to reduce sodium is to avoid processed foods, since food companies rely heavily on salt for not only flavour but also its ability to prevent spoilage. Or for an even more disciplined approach, try eliminating sodium from your diet completely for three weeks, then gradually adding it back in.

The goal is to “retrain” your palate to be more sensitive to salty foods, noted Shelke. To cut back on salt intake, the Mayo Clinic advises eating fresh fruits and vegetables and using fresh herbs to flavour meals. When dining out, specify that your dish be prepared without salt. Read the label and find out how much sodium a product contains before purchasing it.

Want muscles like Popeye? Eat mustard, not spinach

ANI / Saturday, October 8, 2011 2:48 IST

Are you a fitness fanatic looking to build your muscles like ‘Popeye the Sailor’? Then consider reaching for the mustard, and not a can of spinach as claimed by the legendary cartoon character, who said “I am strong to the finish because I eat all my spinach”.

A new research has revealed that a steroid, found in the mustard plant, triggers a response similar to anabolic steroids with minimal side effects.

Homobrassinolide produces an anabolic effect, increases appetite and muscle mass along with the number and size of muscle fibres.

We hope that one day brassinosteroids may provide an effective, natural, and safe alternative for age- and disease-associated muscle loss, or be used to improve endurance and physical performance,” Slavko Komarnytsky, a researcher involved in the work from the Plants for Human Health Institute said.

“Because some plants we eat contain these compounds, like mustards, in the future we may be able to breed or engineer these plants for higher brassinosteroid content, thus producing functional foods that can treat or prevent diseases and increase physical performance,” he stated.

Komarnytsky and his colleagues exposed rat skeletal muscle cells to different amounts of homobrassinolide and measured protein synthesis in cell culture, which resulted in increased protein synthesis and decreased protein degradation in these cells.

Healthy rats then received oral administration of homobrassinolide daily for 24 days and changes in their body weight, food consumption, and body composition were measured using dual-emission X-ray absorptiometry analysis that showed increased lean body mass in treated animals over those who were not treated.

The researchers repeated this study on rats that were fed high protein diet and similar results were observed.

They also used surgically castrated peri-pubertal rat models to examine the ability of homobrassinolide to restore androgen-dependent tissues after androgen deprivation following castration and the results showed increased grip strength and an increase in the number and size of muscle fibers crucial for increased physical performance.

“The temptation is to see this discovery as another quick fix to help you go from fat to fit,” Gerald Weissmann, Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal said .

“And to a very small degree, this may be true. In reality, however, this study identifies an important drug target for a wide range of conditions that cause muscle wasting,” he added.

The results of the study have been published in the FASEB Journal.

Good old lauki juice, can be lethal

DNA / Vineeta Pandey / Wednesday, October 26, 2011 10:00 IST

Believed to have medicinal value that can cure many ailments such as diabetes, urinary disorders, aid weight loss and digestion, the good-old lauki (bottle gourd) may not be so good after all.

According to scientists, a bitter lauki when consumed with any other juice can be lethal. The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry (MoHWF) has issued an advisory based on recommendations of an expert committee warning people from consuming bitter lauki, or mixing it up with any other juice. The advisory has been issued following cases of serious health problems cropping up after consumption of lauki juice, popularised by Baba Ramdev.

According to Ramdev, lauki juice mixed with aloe vera, amla, karela, jamun, lemon is as an effective ayurvedic remedy for many ailments including diabetes and blood pressure. Following his call for this ayurvedic concoction, lauki juice became the household remedy for many ailments and many even believed it to be a tonic, aid digestion, prevent acidity, prevent urinary disorders, and excessive sodium loss from the body, till a man died last year after consuming lauki juice.

His death led to suspicions about the efficacy and reliability of lauki juice. The matter was even raised in Parliament prompting government to set up an expert committee to examine the issue. Now following an intensive study on the toxicity of the vegetable juices, the Union Health Ministry has said that lauki juice should not be mixed with any juice.

In fact, it has warned people saying lauki should always be tasted first even before being consumed even as vegetable. If found bitter it should be discarded immediately as bitter lauki juice has the potential to be toxic. The same is the case with other fruits and vegetables from the cucumber family as they are believed to have harmful toxins that give bitter taste. And in case there is any discomfort following its consumption, it is best to rush to hospital.

The advisory is based on recommendations of an expert committee comprising of doctors from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The committee was set up to investigate the issue of safety of consumption of lauki juice after a Member of Parliament raised the issue following death of an official with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in June last year. The official had died shortly after consuming lauki juice mixed with karela (bitter gourd) juice to control diabetes. Despite being bitter the official drank the concoction. Earlier this month about 16 trainee of Haryana police fell ill due to food poisoning after eating lauki for dinner.

To the doctors, the expert committee has recommended conducting tests including prothrombin time and platelet counts, serum amylase, blood sugar along with X-Ray chest, ECG, Ultrasound and Endoscopy. Since there is no specific antidote available, the general supportive care such IV fluids/ crystalloids / blood products/ fresh frozen plasma has to be given to maintain the hemodynamics and electrolyte balance.

Dear everybody, This is just for information.

October 14, 2011 — The next time you reach for your cell phone, consider this: A new study found that 92% of cell phones in the U.K. have bacteria on them - including E. coli -- because people aren't washing their hands after going to the bathroom.
The E. coli came from fecal bacteria, which can survive on hands and surfaces for hours.
Researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Queen Mary, University of London looked at cell phones in 12 cities in the U.K.
They took 390 samples from cell phones and hands, which were then analyzed for germs. People were also asked about their hand hygiene.
Phone Filth and Other Facts
The study found:
  • 92% of phones had bacteria on them.
  • 82% of hands had bacteria on them.
  • 16% of hands and 16% of phones had E. coli bacteria, which is found in feces.
However, 95% of people said they washed their hands with soap where possible, which suggests we have a tendency to lie about our hygiene habits.
"We're pretty shocked to find the vast majority of mobile phones -- 92% -- had bacteria all over them. Often large numbers of bacteria,” said hygiene expert Val Curtis, PhD, of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
"That isn't necessarily something that we should worry about, but what is worrying is that 16% of mobile phones had E. coli on them. E. coli comes from human [and animal] feces,” she says. "That means that people with dirty hands are not washing their hands after using the toilet, for example. Then they're handling their mobile phones.”
It’s not just cell phones that the dirty hands are touching, Curtis says.
"They're also touching other surfaces as well,” she says. “They're spreading fecal bugs on everything they touch really."
Toilet Texting?
Is there a more worrying way the phones are getting contaminated -- by people using them while they're in the bathroom?
"We didn't ask people whether they'd used their phones in the toilet. That might be something that would be interesting to study," Curtis says. "People do tend to use their mobile phones everywhere they go. Perhaps we should discourage their use in the toilet."
So is having unclean hands a modern-day problem linked to our new technology?
"Humans have had infections since before they were human. It's a really ancient problem," she says. "Bugs are evolutionary masters at getting from person to person.”
Anything that you touch can become a source of infection, Curtis says. So hand washing after using the toilet is crucial.
Excuses, Excuses
Curtis says people can be quick to excuse their nasty habits.
"They say that they're in a hurry, they say that the water's too cold. People don't actually feel that their hands have got contaminated.
"Everyone knows they should do it, so it's not education that's the answer. We need to find other ways to remind people that it's disgusting that their hands are dirty and their hands get smelly and foul after the toilet,” she says. "Disgusting people with the state of their hands is probably the most effective way of getting people to wash their hands."

Are you suffering from hypertension?

Twenty five year old Sourya Mitra, a Delhi-based freelance writer, had been preparing to run a full marathon. For six months, Sourya had been training hard to build his core muscles, eating nutritious food, and had given up drinking. Weeks before the marathon, he visited his general physician (GP) for a routine checkup and was diagnosed with high blood pressure (BP) bordering on hypertension. On being quizzed by his GP about any symptoms he had noticed, Sourya said he had been experiencing palpitation and dizziness but assumed it was because of the excessive training.

Sourya had in fact missed two of the clearest symptoms of the otherwise asymptomatic high blood pressure. He has been on medication since. In his defence, he says, “I always thought the dizziness was because I was training hard. The palpitation did worry me, but I assumed I was too young to have a heart ailment. Now I pop a pill everyday to keep my blood pressure under control. I really wish I had paid attention to my symptoms and not tried to self medicate myself.”

What happened?
High BP in youngsters is the result of a combination of reasons, including lack of adequate exercise, stress, poor eating habits, excessive intake of salt and fatty acids. Also, it’s possible that Sourya was underline hypertensive from childhood, and excessive training only worsened the situation.

Warning signs
Usually, hypertension is asymptomatic, especially in the young. But if you feel your performance dropping at school or work, or feel your concentration suddenly faltering, it should ring a bell in your head. Other symptoms like dizziness, palpitation, headaches and lethargy are also indicators of high blood pressure. High BP will in itself not kill you, but it can lead to organ damage. It also attacks the cardiovascular system, kidneys, eyes and brain.

The solutions
Even though a lot of youngsters suffer from high BP, usually it is not secondary hypertension. This arises out of ailments in the kidney or thyroid glands. Once secondary causes are ruled out, it is a matter of taking medicines and changing your lifestyle to get fit – by inculcating healthier habits like increasing fibre content in diet, exercising and reducing weight. Continue your medication till your BP comes under control and gradually reduce the dose.

Lifestyle choices
It might not sound appealing, but you have to start young. You can eat what you desire – but make sure you complement your diet with fresh vegetables, fruits and fibre. Since stress contributes to hypertension, reduce it by meditating. Exercising is very important; no one is asking you to build packs of muscles, but walking everyday for 20 minutes is ideal.

Also, stop smoking and restrict alcohol consumption to safe levels. Parents should not put stress on kids as that could lead them to develop underline hypertension.

Pranayam cures digestion related problems completely. Practice yogasana, but practicing pranayam is compulsory.

Agnisar pranayama should be practiced regularly - it improves digestion and overcomes gastric trouble, constipation, sour belches, and ulcers and other stomach related problems. It improves appetite, reduces sugar level, and cures urinary problems. It relieves burning sensation while passing urine, and stops excessive urination. Kapalbhati pranayam should also be practiced, as it is the best for the stomach. It overcomes all the diseases related to digestive system and strengthens the weak intestines. It is the best pranayam and improves the health of the body.

Uddiyan bandha is also beneficial to overcome stomach related problems, improves appetite and arouses the prana and purifies manipura chakra.

Diet and Regimen to Improve Digestion

Diet control is the best way to overcome this problem. Keep fast for a few days and drink hot water with lemon juice depending on the season and drink apple juice twice or thrice daily.

Take juice of raw vegetable with honey. Raw vegetable juice improves digestion and increases appetite.

Start eating chapatti, salad, vegetable, curd, fruit, milk, vegetable juice, and soup after fasting period. In crease the food intake, as you get relieved from this problem.

Eat slightly less than hunger. Drink hot water if you feel thirsty at the time of eating food. Drink lemon water half an hour before meals to reduce hunger and improve digestion.

Sleep turning to the left hand side after meals. It will be helpful in digesting food.

Eat two and a half hours before going to bed at night and keep a cold bandage on stomach, cover it with a shawl and remove it after two hours or in the morning.

Natural Medicines to Improve Digestion

Grate one to three grams of ginger pieces and add a pinch of rock salt. Take it one hour before meals once daily for eight days. It overcomes digestion problems, clears the stomach and increases appetite.

Take three grams of coriander powder and three grams of dry ginger powder with 100 grams of hot water.

Grind equal quantities of cinnamon, dry ginger and red cardamom. Take two grams of this before meals.

Roast small harad in clarified butter and grind it with black salt. Take little quantities with water twice daily.

Mix a little bit of black salt in two spoons of onion juice and drink in the morning.

Mix half spoon each of radish juice and lemon juice, a pinch of rock salt, four black pepper seeds, two pinches of ajowan churna and take this after meals.

Grind three black pepper seeds, three cloves and 30 neem buds, add a little bit of sugar and take twice daily for a fortnight.

Add a little bit of sugar in papaya juice and drink.

Mix a little bit of lemon juice in a spoonful of ginger juice and drink.

Add a little bit of black salt in half a cup of pineapple juice and drink.

Time to relax and rejuvenate post party

After the festival of food, revelry and fun, it is time to rest, rejuvenate and let the body cleanse itself so that it can regain its balance and shape again. The previous week has been one of excess food and spirits, not to mention late nights and lack of sleep, so this week can be the one to prepare oneself for the upcoming wedding season.

Sleep: This is number one on the agenda. A good night’s restful sleep can take years off the face. Sleep also makes people relaxed, cheerful and takes away fine lines and sallow skin. Other activities which can induce deep relaxation are shava-asan, pranayam and chanting ‘Om’.

Reflexology: For all the ladies who have been wearing high heels last week, there is nothing like a session of reflexology. Soaking feet in warm water, followed by reflexology, is a treat for tired feet.

Shirodhara: This is a must if one is tired as the treatment is a popular ayurvedic procedure used as a de-stressor.

Neck and shoulder massage: Coupled with flexibility exercises and hot pads, this can relieve days of knotted muscles and also relieve physical manifestations of stress.

Water, fruit and herbal tea detox: A day spent eating only fruit, and drinking only herbal teas and water is a definite way to detoxify one’s liver.

A holiday: Spending a few hours away from laptops, iPads, BlackBerrys and other phones is a great way to relax. Constant use of devices can make people edgy and restless, and it creates irritability and frustration. One can spend a few hours in silence or listening to the sounds of nature. Nowadays, a lot of music for healing and meditation is available. Listening to such music synchronises the body rhythm.

A walk: Natural sunlight and an unhurried walk can cure many anxieties and gives a good perspective to things. A break from the constant hurried pace of rushing around is also a good idea, even if it’s just for a few hour

SLIPPED DISK

Slipped Disk Overview

The disks are protective shock-absorbing pads between the bones of the spine. Although they do not actually "slip," a disk may split or rupture. This can cause the disk to fail, allowing the gel to escape into the surrounding tissue. The leaking jellylike substance can place pressure on the spinal cord or on a single nerve fiber and cause pain either around the damaged disk or anywhere along the area controlled by that nerve. This condition is also known as a herniated, ruptured, prolapsed, or, more commonly, slipped disk.

The most frequently affected area is the low back, but any disk can rupture, including those in the neck.

Slipped Disk Causes
Factors that lead to injury from a slipped disk include aging with associated degeneration and loss of elasticity of the discs and supporting structures; improper lifting, especially if accompanied by twisting or turning; and excessive strain. Sudden forceful trauma is a more rare cause.

Slipped Disk Symptoms
The nerves of the body exit the spine at each spinal level. A herniated disk can therefore produce symptoms anywhere along the course of that nerve, though the injury and irritation of the nerve are at the spine itself (this is known as referred pain). A slipped disk can produce varying degrees of pain in the back or neck along with numbness or weakness.
  • For slipped disks in the neck - Numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain in the shoulder, neck, arm, or hand

  • For slipped disks in the lower back

    • Numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain in the buttocks, back, legs, or feet
    • Numbness and tingling around the anus or genitals
    • Pain down the back of each leg from the buttocks to the knee (this is called sciatica)
    • Pain with movement, straining, coughing, or doing leg raises
    • Difficulty controlling bowel movements or bladder function

When to Seek Medical Care
You should consult with your doctor for any back pain significant enough to limit activity, any back pain that lasts more than a few days, or any back pain associated with numbness or weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever, or abdominal or chest pain. The doctor may suggest an urgent office evaluation or may advise you to go to the hospital's emergency department for evaluation.

Any injury that may suggest more significant back or neck problems, such as a fall from a height or a direct blow to the spine, should be evaluated at the hospital's emergency department. Consider calling 911 for an ambulance. Medical teams can immobilize the spine and protect against further damage.

You should also seek emergency evaluation if the pain or symptoms are severe enough to prevent you from walking, are associated with severe numbness or weakness of any extremity, are associated with loss of bowel or bladder control, or are associated symptoms not readily explained by the spine problem (such as fever, abdominal pain, or chest pain).

Exams and Tests
The doctor will take a complete medical history and perform a physical examination.

  • This history should include other illnesses, prior spine problems, any injuries, duration and type of symptoms, and response to treatments. The examination should include a spine examination, testing of basic nerve functions, an abdominal examination, and a general screening.

  • Often no diagnostic tests are needed for adequate treatment. In certain cases, imaging studies or laboratory tests of blood and urine may provide your doctor further information necessary to establish an adequate diagnosis. If needed at all, they may not be necessary immediately. Sometimes they are ordered later if basic treatments fail to improve your condition.

  • If imaging studies are taken, they are often one of the following:

    • Plain x-rays (and even CT scans) cannot depict a prolapsed disk and can only identify bony abnormalities. These x-rays are best used to evaluate back pain that is from causes other than a prolapsed disk, such as bony displacement, tumor, or broken bone. Most young or middle-aged people without a history to suggest trauma or tumor are best served without the expense and radiation associated with obtaining these x-rays. In most cases, the bones seen on x-ray are normal.

    • More specialized tests include an MRI or myelogram (which includes injecting dye into the spinal column) of the back. These are better for diagnosing a prolapsed disk and the way the specific nerve is affected. In the absence of signs or symptoms suggesting severe nerve damage, however, these studies are very rarely indicated or ordered early in the course of the evaluation. This is because of cost, availability of the test, and the fact that the findings rarely affect initial treatment decisions. Your doctor may obtain these tests after a course of treatment fails to provide you relief.

    • Bone scans can detect infection, healing fractures, or tumors. This test is essentially never ordered as part of an emergency evaluation and generally needs to be arranged by your doctor in advance.

Slipped Disk Treatment

Self-Care at Home

Medical Treatment
The doctor often prescribes bed rest or limited activity for several days followed by gradual increase in activity over the next few weeks. Strict bed rest is generally no longer advised because people with back pain have been shown to recover more quickly with normal activity as long as lifting, bending, and strain are limited.

Treat with ice or cold packs early after an injury and switch to heat later. Heat may be used early if the pain and symptoms are not caused by a sudden injury.
Physical therapy, exercise, and massage can be helpful if indicated (always check with your doctor before resuming any stressful activity).

Medications
Ibuprofen (Motrin) or other anti-inflammatory medications may be recommended. These can be safely taken with acetaminophen (Tylenol). Medicines to relax the surrounding muscle tightness and spasms are used for some people. A short course of a medical steroid (similar to cortisone) also may be used. Rarely is the use of a prescription narcotic medication needed for more than a couple of days, if needed at all.

Surgery
If these measures are not successful within a reasonable time and the tests confirm a herniated disk as the source of symptoms, surgery may be considered. Except in extreme cases or in those that have a high potential for permanent nerve damage, surgery is no longer considered early in a case. Often, time and basic spine care resolve most cases. Several surgical options exist. Your doctor will refer you to a spine specialist to discuss which option is best for you and what the likelihood of success will be.

Next Steps

Follow-up
Follow your instructions carefully and do not attempt to skip steps in your care or overexert yourself too soon. Your initial treatment plan may need to be extended or modified based on your response to the treatment.

Prevention
  • Regular exercise can decrease hardening and early breakdown of the disks, as well as improve the overall strength and tone of the supporting muscles and structures.

  • Use proper techniques while performing strenuous exercise and strenuous work, including lifting. Lifting should be done with the legs performing the work, not the back. The worst possible combination of activities for your spine is heavy lifting while bending and twisting at the same time.

  • Use of a spine brace during heavy lifting may be advised. Its proper use is to keep your back straight and encourage proper lifting technique. It should not be used as a substitute for proper technique or to encourage you to exceed safe lifting limits.

Outlook
The vast majority of disk problems improve without any surgery. Most people are able to return to normal function (with emphasis on protecting the spine from recurrent or new injury) within a short time. It is not unusual for similar symptoms to return in the future, however.

Importance of having Breakfast

You may not be the only one, as many people, who know the benefits of eating a healthy meal, still leave the house in the morning without having consumed a filling or adequate breakfast.

Most people who skip breakfast or who eat an unhealthy one use either lack of time in the morning or weight watching as their excuse.

We will explain further on in the article that skipping breakfast in order to lose weight is a total misconception that holds absolutely no truth and in fact the opposite is true, in that skipping breakfast, in some cases, could cause you to become overweight.

What happens to our body first thing in the morning?
If you consider that when we wake up in the morning, for the majority of us, our body and brain have been without food for around 10 - 12 hours and for children it may be longer.

Our body is similar to a car in the fact that it needs fuel to run, and like a car, the better you look after your body, the longer and better it will run.

Our bodies must be fuelled several times each day so that we function efficiently and carry out our daily tasks as best we can. In the morning, after many hours without food, it is essential to refuel in order to provide the necessary nutrients and energy to get us through the first part of the day.

Why is it important to fuel our brain?
It is from our brain that messages are sent to other parts of the body to get them moving and working well.

If our brain is not fed, it will act in a slow and sluggish manner, which will impact greatly on the rest of our body.

The brain requires glucose or blood sugar to provide it with energy to function, whilst the muscles of our body need glucose to activate them and get the body working physically.

To work and feel well, our blood sugar levels must be maintained at a certain level. After long periods without food, our blood sugar levels fall, causing tiredness and irritability amongst other symptoms that occur when you need food.

The disadvantages of not having breakfast
If you deprive your body of food in the morning you may find that you feel tired, dizzy and irritable and that your concentration is poor. It may take you longer to carry out tasks or you just might not feel up to anything mentally strenuous let alone physical. You will probably find yourself snapping at people unintentionally, especially if under stress and you will no doubt soon start to feel pangs of hunger as the morning wears on.

If you don't eat anything in the morning, you will most likely find yourself craving something sweet to eat, as your body cries out for a quick fix to boost energy levels. If you are at work and it is not yet time for lunch, this is one of the moments when you may find yourself reaching for something very unhealthy such as a chocolate bar, croissant, cream cake or other unhealthy snacks. For those who are watching their weight, this is disastrous.

It is also possible that you may become so hungry that you grab twice as many unhealthy snacks to eat before lunch or even end up eating all of your packed lunch by 11.30 am.

No breakfast does not equal losing weight
Some people erroneously think that by skipping breakfast, they will reduce their calorie intake for the day and that it will help them to lose weight.

Not only are you giving your body the worst possible start in the morning and putting it under unnecessary pressure, this is also not the case.

Missing breakfast often leads to overeating at some point later on in the day, usually snacking on unhealthy foods, which are high in calories and fat. You may also become over hungry mid-morning and by lunchtime could end up eating twice as much than if you had eaten a healthy breakfast that released energy slowly throughout the day.

Three healthy square meals or six smaller meals a day should keep you going throughout, without having the need to snack in between.

The disadvantages of not eating an adequate breakfast
People who start the day with a strong, sweet cup of coffee and a croissant, Danish pastry or bowl of sugar-loaded cereal, may think that because they have eaten something, that they are starting the day well, and providing their body and brain with a good start to the morning. They may also wonder why, their energy boost doesn't last very long and why they are ravenous mid-morning even after having consumed breakfast first thing.

This is because although they did make time to have breakfast, their breakfast choice was very poor.

Caffeine, as we all know, gives you instant energy and many people feel that they cannot start the morning or even go through the day without at least several shots! In actual fact, caffeine produces adrenaline, which sends some of the body's stored glucose to the brain.

Cereals high in sugar have very little nutritional value. When eaten their high amounts of sugar are released almost immediately into the bloodstream (sugar fix) and provide an instant energy boost.

Together with the caffeine, blood sugar (glucose) levels rocket and energy levels soar.

The downside of this effect is that the energy boost is extremely short-lived. As the pancreas responds to this surge of glucose, it produces insulin in order to bring the levels back down to a reasonable amount.

This means that a few hours after this unhealthy breakfast, you are left feeling tired and hungry again and in need of another quick sugar fix.

The advantages of a healthy and nutritious breakfast
After a good night's sleep and with an empty stomach in the morning, it makes sense that the best way to start the day and to energize and revitalize your body, is with a filling, nutritious and healthy breakfast that will keep you satiated until the next meal.

Our body needs a healthy breakfast packed full of vitamins and nutrients whilst also providing energy and fuel for the brain.

The best types of foods to be eaten at breakfast are complex carbohydrates such as whole grains including oats, rye bread and millet together with a small amount of dried fruit and freshly squeezed juice.

These foods have a low GI (glycaemic index), which means that they release glucose steadily and slowly into the bloodstream, unlike the unhealthier breakfast choices mentioned earlier. Consequently, these foods will keep you fuller for longer, prevent unhealthy snacking, keep energy levels steady without dipping and provide you with essential vitamins and minerals that may be missed at other meals.

Many people like to consume some form of protein in the morning, as protein balances blood sugar levels and recent studies have also proven that concentration levels are enhanced if some form of protein in consumed during the breakfast meal.

Excellent sources of protein, which can be incorporated into the breakfast meal are eggs, fish, nuts and seeds. Eggs are a particularly rich source of choline (B vitamin), which the body converts into acetyl-choline, a neurotransmitter found in the brain.

Studies show that adults and children who eat breakfast in the morning perform better at school and at work. It is proven that with breakfast, concentration and memory improve, mental performance and problem-solving ability is better and learning ability is increased.

Not only this but studies generally prove that most people who eat breakfast manage their weight better, are not obese or overweight, have lower levels of cholesterol, which means they are less likely to suffer from heart disease and are generally in better health overall, not to mention in better mood.

In children, their concentration and productivity at school is better and they are more creative, interested and alert.

Common sleeping pills linked to early death
Higher doses also linked to increased risk of cancer

Click here to join World Malayali Club
People who take commonly prescribed sleeping pills may be four times
more likely to die prematurely, according to the latest research.
High doses of sleeping pills also increased risk of cancer by about a third,
said the researchers from the Scripps Clinic Viterbi Family Sleep Centre, California,
and the Jackson Hole Centre for Preventative Medicine, Wyoming.

The study, published in the journal BMJ Open, analysed data on more than 10,500 men and women
living in California who took a range of sleeping pills for an average of 2.5 years between 2002
and 2007. Patient survival was then compared with that of over 23,500 people matched for age,
sex and lifestyle but who had not been prescribed sleeping pills over the same period.

The drugs prescribed included benzodiazepines,
such as temazepam and diazepam; non-benzodiazepines,
such as zolpidem, zoplicone, and zaleplon;
barbiturates and sedative antihistamines.

People prescribed up to 18 doses of pills a year were more than 3.5 times as
likely to die as those prescribed none, the study found.
But those prescribed between 18 and 132 doses of pills were more than four times as
likely to do die compared with people who had not been prescribed sleeping pills.

The risk of dying prematurely increased with increasing doses of sleeping pills,
as those taking the most doses (132+ per year) were more than five times as likely to die
as those prescribed none, the researchers found.

Those taking the highest number of doses were also 35 per cent more likely to be diagnosed
with any type of cancer, which could not be explained by pre-existing poor health.
Although the findings showed a statistical association between taking sleeping pills
with an increased risk of death, it still did not establish a cause of death, the researchers said.

They said it might be time to "reconsider whether even the short term use of hypnotics,
as given qualified approval in National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence [NICE] guidance,
is sufficiently safe."

Some 2.8 million prescriptions were dispensed for temazepam and nearly 5.3 million
for zopiclone in England in 2010.
Malcolm Lader, professor of clinical psychopharmacology at the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London,
said people should not panic as a result of the findings, as more studies were needed.

"I agree that these drugs do have problems but I find some of these results quite difficult to accept.

"The main one is that with 18 doses a year you have three times the mortality - that's quite incredible
because you would have people dropping like flies.

"The study needs to be replicated in a different sample and I think we
need to hold judgement until we have further studies.

"What we don't want is people stopping sleeping tablets and then going through
a very disturbing period of insomnia.

"People should discuss this with their GP but should not under any
circumstances stop taking their medication."

Prostate cancer‏

HEALTH

© Andrey Ushakov - Fotolia.com

It's the most common cause of cancer in men, and the second biggest cause of death from cancer after lung cancer. Each year around 37,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 10,000 die from it.

At the start of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, we look at the pros and cons of the prostate specific antigen (PSA) test, which can indicate whether a man has prostate cancer.

Currently, the UK does not have a screening programme for prostate cancer, simply because the PSA test is not reliable enough.

The PSA is the only blood test available which can indicate that a man may have prostate cancer, but it is often positive for men who do not have the disease.

For men without symptoms of prostate cancer, the test can help to identify a fast-growing cancer that needs to treated ASAP, but it can also expose a slow-growing cancer with which the man could have lived without treatment until the end of his life.

For these reasons, the UK National Screening Programme recommends that men over the age of 50 should make an informed decision on whether they wish to be tested or not, after a discussion with their GP.

The PSA test

The PSA is a blood test which measures the level of a protein made by normal cells of the prostate gland. Prostate cancer cells also produce this protein.

PSA levels in the blood naturally increase with age as the prostate gland gets bigger. Raised PSA levels can also occur as a result of a urine infection, ejaculation, vigorous exercise (such as cycling) and other prostate conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatitis in addition to prostate cancer.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • May detect prostate cancer at an early stage before symptoms appear, particularly more aggressive cancers.
  • The higher the levels of PSA, the more likely it is to be caused by prostate cancer.
  • If PSA results are low, this can provide reassurance to the man.
  • It can also help to pick up other prostate problems.

Cons

  • The test is not specific for prostate cancer. Two out of three men with raised PSA levels won't have prostate cancer.
  • The PSA test cannot differentiate between slow and fast growing prostate cancers.
  • The test is not sensitive enough - i.e. it cannot pick up all prostate cancers. This could provide false reassurance to men and even cause them to ignore any early symptoms which should be checked out by their GP.

If PSA levels are raised, but the prostate gland feels normal during a rectal examination, a doctor may decide to wait and then repeat the test.

If PSA levels are high, further tests - such as a prostate biopsy - may be carried out to determine the cause. Prostate biopsies are carried out under a local anaesthetic. Despite this, some men may find the procedure uncomfortable or embarrassing.

Risk factors for prostate cancer

Being at a higher risk of prostate cancer may influence your decision on whether you want to be tested.

Risk factors include:

  • Age. The risk in men under the age of 50 is low, but starts to increase after this. Over 70 per cent of new cases occur in men over the age of 65.
  • Having a close family member who has the disease - father, brother or son.
  • A family history of breast cancer may also increase the risk of a small number of prostate cancers.
  • Ethnicity - Men of African Caribbean or African descent have a higher risk of disease.
  • A diet high in animal fats and low in fresh fruit and vegaetables may increase the risk of disease.

Warning signs to be aware of

In its early stages, the symptoms of prostate cancer may not be obvious. But they may include any of the following:

  • Need to urinate often, especially at night
  • Passing urine more often, daytime and/or night-time
  • Slow at getting the flow of urine started
  • Weaker flow of urine
  • Starting and stopping whilst passing urine

 why must we drink water‏

Most of us know that up to seventy per cent of the total body weight is due to water. Although it is present in all parts of the body, it is more present in organs such as lungs and brain and fluids such as blood, lymph, saliva and secretions by the organs of the digestive system. The common belief is that we feel thirsty only when our body needs water. While this is true, recent research studies have indicated that there are several other indicators of inadequate water in some or all parts of the body. Ignoring these indicators can lead to several major diseases. Most of us spend a lot of our working hours in air-conditioned environment so naturally we don't feel thirsty but that does not mean that our body does not need water. Lack of water can lead to fatigue too. So, for your glowing health, drink enough water.

Importance of water for maintaining normal health:
Just as water helps a seed grow into a tree, it also helps our body. The flow of water inside and outside the cells generates energy. This energy is stored in body along with other chemical sources of energy in the body. The energy generated by the water in the cells helps transmit impulses in the nerves. Water content in the body influences the functions of the various proteins and enzymes that are dissolved in it.
Water helps maintain the moisture of the lining of the internal organs of the body. It maintains normal volume and consistency of fluids such as blood and lymph. It regulates body temperature.
It removes 'toxins' from the body
Water is essential for regulating the normal structure and functions of the skin. The body loses about four liters of water every day. It is, therefore, necessary to replenish this volume by drinking at least the equivalent amount of water every day. Inadequate intake of water can lead to dehydration.

Miracle spices for a healthier You

India is the land of spices and when you go on a quest to understand the varied spices you can incorporate into your diet; it might turn out to be your spiciest adventure yet! These spices are vibrant and they turn your food from bland to delicious in a matter of seconds. You don’t need to be a master-homemaker or a culinary goddess to understand these spices or how these should be used. These are readily available and consumed by most of us, without actually knowing about the health benefits associated with these magic ingredients.

Let’s start our list of the top five miracle spices with turmeric, one of India’s essential cooking ingredients.

Turmeric: One of nature’s most powerful healers, turmeric is an essential spice that is added to innumerable dishes in India. It adds a nice flavour and a rich yellowish hue to food. Its health benefits have made it a firm favourite and you can use it to speed up wound healing or to treat damaged skin. It detoxifies your liver and improves your overall health. What more could you possibly want from a spice?

Cinnamon: Add it to your drinks, curries or desserts – Cinnamon’s goodness can be experienced in many ways. Apart from being beneficial to people with cholesterol and diabetes problems, this spice is also known for improving your memory.

Oregano: When you enjoy a delicious slice of pizza the next time, think of how you are benefitting from the anti-bacterial properties of oregano and not about all the extra calories you are adding. Use it either fresh or dried as the flavour it brings is always rich. This wonderfully aromatic herb is also a good source of vitamin K.

Garlic: Yeah, we know it leaves a bad smell behind and can give you bad breath, but Garlic is the cure-all spice that one simply cannot do without. It has anti-fungal properties that treat infections and it also cleanses your blood. Do not take too much of it though, as it can irritate your digestive system.

Coriander: Our final miracle spice is Coriander, popularly known as dhania in India. By adding this spice to your dish right before serving, you can add flavour and aroma. It can treat swellings, anaemia, and also improve your digestion. The list of benefits coriander has is a long one and there are books about it so stating its benefits in brief is not an easy thing to do.

Everyday cooking can become an exotic thing with a dash of these wonderful spices. It adds flavour to your cooking and some of us, especially in India simply cannot do without it. Whether it’s a samosa or a cinnamon roll, entice your taste buds with these everyday spices!

Body clock link to sudden death
Electrical activity of heart affected

Scientists have discovered a link between natural circadian rhythms
and sudden cardiac death.
Ventricular arrhythmia, or abnormal heart rhythms,
are the most common cause of sudden cardiac death.

It's already known that they most frequently occur in the morning
after waking, followed by a smaller peak in the evening hours.
According to an article in the journal Nature, a protein known as krüppel-like factor 15
(Klf15) links the natural circadian rhythms to the heart's electrical activity and heartbeat.

Klf15 is a known controller of the body's circadian rhythms, or body clock,
whose levels fluctuate during the day, but Klf15 is often lacking in patients
with heart failure. Meanwhile, an excess of the protein can cause
electrocardiography (ECG) changes as seen in patients with Brugada Syndrome,
a genetic heart rhythm disorder.

A team of US scientists looked at the effect of this protein on the heart rhythm
of mice which had been genetically altered to produce excess amounts of Klf15,
 or none at all.
Both types of genetically altered mice had an increased the risk of
deadly arrhythmias, compared with their normal counterparts.

"It is the first example of a molecular mechanism for the circadian change
in susceptibility to cardiac arrhythmias," said study author Dr Xander Wehrens
from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

"If there was too much Klf15 or none, the mice were at risk for
developing the arrhythmias," he added.
The authors think that Klf15 affects the levels of another protein (KChIP2) which
influences the electrical activity of heart muscle cells. This in turn could lead to
heart rhythm disturbances, increasing the risk of sudden death.

The findings may also help in the development of new medicines to regulate Klf15 levels,
particularly at certain times of the day when sudden death is more common, the authors said.

Study co-author Professor Mukesh Jain of Case Western Reserve University in Ohio said:
"This is the first time a definitive link between circadian rhythms
and sudden cardiac death has been established.

"We are just scratching the surface. It might be that, with further study,
assessment of circadian disruption in patients with cardiovascular disease might
lead us to innovative approaches to diagnosis, prognosis and treatment."

We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths.
It's not as easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat.

What is the correct way of eating fruits?

IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS!
FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.

If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system,
supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.

FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD.
Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit.
The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines,

but it is prevented from doing so.

In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid.
The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices,

the entire mass of food begins to spoil....

So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals!
You have heard people complaining — every time I eat watermelon I burp,

when I eat durian my stomach bloats up,

when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet, etc —

actually all this will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach.

The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat!

Greying hair, balding, nervous outburst and dark circles under the eyes
all these will NOT happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach.

There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.

When you need to drink fruit juice - drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans.
Don't even drink juice that has been heated up.
Don't eat cooked fruits
because you don't get the nutrients at all.
You only get to taste. Cooking destroys all the vitamins.

But eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice.
If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly,

because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it.

You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body.

Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days

and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!

KIWI:
Tiny but mighty.

This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber.

Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.

APPLE:
An apple a day keeps the doctor away?

Although an apple has a low vitamin C content,

it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C

thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

STRAWBERRY:
Protective Fruit.

Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power

among major fruits & protect the body from

cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

ORANGE :
Sweetest medicine.

Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol,

prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON:
Coolest thirst quencher.

Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione,

which helps boost our immune system.

They are also a key source of lycopene — the cancer fighting oxidant.

Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium.

GUAVA & PAPAYA:
Top awards for vitamin C.

They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content.

Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation.

Papaya is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes.

Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer!
Can u believe this??
For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.

It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal.

However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed.

It will slow down the digestion.

Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid,

it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food.

It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer.

It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks
HEART ATTACK PROCEDURE': (THIS IS NOT A JOKE!)

Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting.

Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.

You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack.

Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.

Sixty percent of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up.

Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep.

Let's be careful and be aware.

The more we know the better chance we could survive.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it to 10 people,
you can be sure that we'll save at least one life.

SAFETY TIP - IMPORTANT

This is Something Which We Are Not Focusing in Our Daily
 Life
But Can Produce Multiple Problems in Spine Especially

For Those Who Have Long Sitting Hours.

Make Sure That When You Sit in Your Office Chair

Your Wallet Should Be Not in Your Back Pocket

(Not only Wallet, don’t sit with anything in your back pocket).

ERGONOMIC TIP: Do
 not Sit on Your Wallet!!!

Your wallet can be real pain for your back and the waist,
and it can even lead to shooting pains down the legs.
Sitting on a wallet for prolonged hours every day
can compress sciatic nerve which passes beneath
piriformis muscle and leads to piriformis syndrome,
low back pain & self-inflicted sciatica.

The wallet acts as a wedge that forces the pelvis,
spine and body out of alignment.
Just as you would not sit on a brief case or a rock for an extended period of time,
you should not sit on your wallet.
Anyone who drives more than a half hour
sitting on a wallet is a candidate for sciatica or back pain.

The healthiest option is to move the wallet to your front pocket.

If it’s must to keep your wallet in your back pocket,
you should remove it before you sit down.

Dangers of eating White Bread

The Swiss government has been aware of the dangers of eating white bread for decades and in order to get i ts populace to stop eating it, Switzerland has placed a tax on the purchase of white bread. The tax money is given to bakers to reduce the price of whole wheat bread to encourage people to switch.

The Canadian government passed a law prohibiting the “enrichment” of white bread with synthetic vitamins. Bread must contain the original vitamins found in the grain, not imitations.

Essentially, white bread is “dead” bread. Frequently, consumers are not told the truth about this and so called “enriched” flour.
Why is the color of white bread so white when the flour taken from wheat is not?

It’s because the flour used to make white bread is chemically bleached, just like you bleach your clothes. When you are eating white bread, you are also eating residual chemical bleach.Flour mills use different chemical bleaches, all of which are pretty bad.

Here are a few of them: oxide of nitrogen, chlorine, chloride, nitrosyl and benzoyl peroxide mixed with various chemical salts.

One bleaching agent, chloride oxide, combined with whatever proteins are still left in the flour, produces alloxan. Alloxon is a poison and has been used to produce diabetes in laboratory animals.

Chlorine oxide destroys the vital wheat germ oil. It will also shorten the flour’s shelf life.

Good Nutrition: You won’t find it In White Bread In the process of making flour white, half of the good unsaturated fatty acids, that are high in food value, are lost in the milling process alone, and virtually all the vitamin E is lost with the removal of wheat germ and bran.

As a result, the remaining flour in the white bread you buy, contains only poor quality proteins and fattening starch. But that is not the whole story as to the loss of nutrients.
Scientific Study Has Confirmed What The Swiss Have Known For Years These horrific numbers are the results of a study run by the University of California, College of Agriculture. It is obvious, from what we have learned, that white bread should be avoided.
Whole wheat, rye and grain breads made with whole wheat flour is a better way. It is a good idea to always read the labels and never buy foods that contain artificial flavors, colors, bleached flour, preservatives, hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils.

 KNOW YOUR BLADDER

Do you know these facts about your bladder?

1. Drink what you need. Though the medical recommendation is to
drink 8-12 glasses of water a day the individual needs differ. Some
need a lot of water depending on their physical activity, body
constitution, health conditions, climatic conditions etc while some
need less. Frequent urination or a leak in a healthy adult means he
is taking extra fluids! So drink just enough water to keep yourself
healthily hydrated.

2. Caffeine is not good for your bladder as it is a diuretic. It
speeds up your kidneys and irritate the bladder.
So don't worry about a leaking bladder if you take more
caffeinated drinks.

3. It is not often an enlarged prostate that causes plumbing
problems in men but an overactive bladder. So get it diagnosed and
treated!

4. It is normal to urinate once at night. But twice a night
indicate something is wrong. It could be just that you drink too
much water in the evening or that you are anxious. If it's a
regular habit to urinate more than twice at night keeping a fluid
diary is recommended. Consult your doctor if it persists.

5. Another sign of an overactive bladder is urinating for more than
8 times a day.

6. Being overweight is a reason for stress incontinence. Stress
incontinence is a condition where pressure on the bladder from
cough or sneeze causes you to leak. It happens when the muscles in
the pelvis is weak and cannot handle this pressure.

7. It is not a small bladder that causes frequent leaks but your
capacity. If you drink more water than you can hold you will
probably leak. Weak muscles, nerve damage (due to conditions
like diabetes), medications, infections etc can cause leaking.

Take care!

Here are some Ayurvedic tips for those with oily skin

Sandalwood Powder

Add a few drops of water to half a tablespoon of the powder. Apply the paste all over the face, neck and wash off after 10 minutes. This reduces wrinkles and fine lines while fighting acne and oily skin.

Lemon juice, wheat flour, turmeric powder

Mix all the three ingredients. Yogurt can be used in place of lemon juice. Apply all over the face and let it dry. The acids in the lemon juice treat dark spots on the face clearing the complexion. Turmeric brightens your face.

Milk

Milk is an excellent oil free cleanser and it doesn't dry out the skin. Wash your face with milk so that the pores are not clogged with sebum/oil.

Honey

Not only dry skin but oily skin too, need moisturising. Honey is an excellent natural moisturiser. Apply a thin layer of honey all over the face and wash off after 15 minutes.

Multani mitti

Take one tablespoon multani mitti. Mix about three tablespoons with rose water. Apply to face and neck. Wash face when the pack dries off completely. This is a unique pack containing valuable herbs to give you an oil-free, smooth and clear skin.

Coming on to 98 years and still earning more than I did in my younger days, people ask me how I manage to do it. They regard me as an expert on longevity. I have pronounced on the subject before; I will repeat it with suitable amendments based on my experience in the past two years.

Earlier I had written that longevity is in one's genes: children of long-living parents are likely to live longer than those born to short-lived parents. This did not happen in my own family. My parents who died at 90 and 94 had five children, four sons and a daughter. The first to go was the youngest of the siblings. Next went my sister who was the fourth. My elder brother who was three years older than me went a couple of years ago. Two of us remain; I, who will soon be 98, and my younger brother, a retired Brigadier three years younger than me and in much better health. He looks after our ancestral property. Nevertheless, I still believe gene is the most important factor in determining one's life-span.

More important than analysing longevity is to cope with old age and make terms with it. As we grow older, we are less able to exercise our limbs. We have to devise ways to keep them active. Right into my mid-eighties, I played tennis every morning, did rounds of Lodhi gardens in winter and swam for an hour in summer. I am unable to do this any more. The best way to overcome this handicap is regular massages. I have tried different kinds and was disappointed with the oil drip and smearing of oil on the body. A good massage needs powerful hands going all over one's body from the skull to the toes. I have this done at least once a day or at times twice a day. I am convinced that this has kept me going for so long.

Equally important is the need to cut down drastically one's intake of food and drink. I start my mornings with guava juice. It is tastier and more health-giving than orange or any other fruit juice. My breakfast is one scrambled egg on toast. My lunch is usually patli kichri with dahi or a vegetable. I skip afternoon tea. In the evening, I take a peg of single malt whisky. It gives me a false appetite. Before I eat supper, I say to myself  "Do not eat too much." I also believe that a meal should have just one kind of vegetable or meat followed by a pinch of chooran. It is best to eat alone and in silence. Talking while eating does not do justice to the food and you swallow a lot of it. For me no more Punjabi or Mughlai food. I find South India idli, sambhar and grated coconut easier to digest and healthier.

Never allow yourself to be constipated. The stomach is a storehouse of all kinds of ailments. Our sedentary life tends to make us constipated. Keep your bowels clean however you can: by laxatives, enemas, glycerin suppositories, whatever. Bapu Gandhi fully understood the need to keep bowels clean.

Impose strict discipline on your daily routine. If necessary, use a stop-watch. I have breakfast exactly at 6.30 am lunch at noon, drink at 7 pm, supper at 8. Try to develop peace of mind. For this you must have a healthy bank account. Shortage of money can be very demoralising. It does not have to be in crores, but enough for your future needs and possibility of falling ill.

Never lose your temper, it takes a heavy toll and jangles one's nerves. Never tell a lie. Always keep your national motto in mind: Satyamev Jayate, only truth triumphs. Give generously. Remember you can't take it with you. You may give to your children, servants or charity. You will feel better. There is joy in giving.

Drive out envy of those who have done better than you in life. A Punjabi verse sums up: Rookhi Sookhy Khai kay Thanda Paani Pee Na Veykh paraayee chonparian na Tarssain jee (Eat dry bread and drink cold water Pay no heed or envy those who smear their chapattis with ghee)

Do not conform to the tradition of old people spending time in prayer and long hours in places of worship. That amounts to conceding defeat. Instead take up a hobby like gardening, growing bonsai, helping children of your neighbourhood with their homework. A practice which I have found very effective is to fix my gaze on the flame of candle, empty my mind of everything, but in my mind repeat Aum Shanti, Aum Shanti, Aum Shanti. It does work. I am at peace with the world. We can't all be Fawja Singh who at 100 run a marathon race but we can equal him in longevity and creativity. I wish all my readers long, healthy lives full of happiness.

Thanks.

Kushwant Singh
