“In an extreme panic situation like the 2008-2009, 2011-2012 and the recent 2015-2016 Nifty’s downtrend, the Bollinger Bands of 120-day moving average and the 3 standard deviation have been extremely useful in identifying the bottom and trend reversal,”

Reply for: Value Investing by PE Cut and Paste Will Nifty trade 13

Sim Stanley at 03:30 PM - Jul 27, 2018 ( )

Any Explanations?

while market is trading at 28 PE it will not fall suddenly

1. retail investors will start coming and invest (now via sip)

2.an event is seen in near future ( so it may consolidate at these levels unitl at that event)

3. A fall is sure as per historical charts index did not sustain long at these PE levels

New Thread: how to pick your stocks in portfolio

Get New Stock Ideas With Google Finance Stock Screener Tool

Lot of people as me , “How did I found this new stock? ” whenever I recommend them some new stock whose name they have never heard before. There are 7000 listed companies in the Indian stock exchanges but in media only 10% are discussed which are mainly the front-line large caps and small mid caps stocks. There are many good fundamentally sound stocks that do not get media attention. They come in media only after they have multiplied. You can find such good stocks yourself with the help of screening tools that can filter the stocks based on certain parameters.

There are many screening tools but I like Google finance’s stock screener tool very much. Its free and easy to use.  Here I will show you step by step how to use Google stock screener and apply the Graham’s recommendation to filter out the bad stocks.

There are two boxes in the screener tool in the left box you have to enter the minimum value and in the right one the maximum value.

screener1

How to get new stock ideas with Google stock screener

Step 1: Go to Google Stock Screener

Step 2 : Select country as India, Exchange as BSE and Currency as India Rupee. I am using BSE here because it’s the oldest exchange and many good companies are listed on BSE that are not listed at NSE

Step 3:  We don’t want to deal with companies of very small size. In the market cap box enter 300 crore or just 3B which means 3 billion.

Step 4: Investment should not be done in the stocks which are priced too high. We are looking at the stocks that are fairly priced or which are at the bargain price. We check whether the stock is expensive or cheap using the financial ratio know as P/E ratio. Graham says stocks below the PE of 15 are good for new investment.  Enter 5 in the left box and 15 in the right box. You can also enter zero but that will generate the stock list of companies having no earning. PE of zero means company is not earning anything.

Step 5: If you like companies that reward their investors by paying regular dividends then you can enter 1 or 2 % in the dividend yield box.  After implementing all these things picture will be like this

google finance screener

Step 6: Lets apply some more filters. Click on ‘Add Criteria’  select price to book value and hit the ‘add criteria’ button.  In the same way you can add other filters like debt/assets , current ratio, 5 year sales growth , EPS growth,  profit margin etc

add criteria google screener

Step 7: We are looking for growing companies having good profit margin. For this we will add the  5 year earning per share (EPS) growth rate criteria and add the value 10-50 , this will show up the companies that have increased their EPS by at least 10% over 5 years period.  Similarly we will add the 5 year revenue growth criteria and net profit margin criteria to be of at least 8% . This will filter out the stocks having low revenue growth and profit margin.

Step: 8 To make sure that company has sufficient capacity to pay the debts in adverse situations, we will use the debt to asset ratio. We will enter the value zero and 50 here, that means we want the companies which have either zero debt or their debt is no more than half the value of total assets.

The final picture looks like this

stock-screener

You can add/remove criteria as per your requirement. On applying these criteria I got the list of around 600 stock from  6300 somewhat listed BSE stocks consisting of all sectors. If I go sector specific the list will reduce further. This is a great tool for generating new stock ideas. One should understand that this generated list is not the guarantee of perfection.  You should also check  other fundamental and technical parameters before taking final decision on  investment.

New Thread: Grauer and Weil (India) buy for LONG TERM

Sim Stanley at 03:45 PM - May 12, 2015 ( )

Will you buy a stock which costs only Rs 15 per share and has potential of earning over 80 percent in a year’s time? Shares of  Grauer and Weil (India)  have jumped 245 percent from a mere Rs 4.50 to Rs 15.24 in last 12 months. So, what is ticking the stock on buyers’ radar? East India Securities has initiated coverage on the stock with a buy rating and a bullish target of Rs 28 (around 82 percent jump), stating that its market leadership position in the surface protection business boosts it to capitalise on the improving business scenario. The company has a market capitalisation of  Rs 352.30 crore. Its FY14 sales turnover was Rs 385.86 crore with net profit of  Rs 30.79 crore. “Its sales and profits have grown13 percent CAGR and 17 percent CAGR during FY10-FY14 despite slowdown in the economy and is all set to generate healthy free cash flow in next couple of years with low gearing and no major capex required in next 2 to 3 years. Revenues from real estate business will also see a sharp jump as renewal of 40 percent of lease, due next year, and is likely to be at 75 percent increment,” the brokerage says in a report. Grauer and Weil has 38 percent market share in the Rs 7000 mn electroplating chemical industry. It offers surface treatment products and solutions in chemicals, equipments, paints and lubricants segments. It also has a 10 acre land in Mumbai's western suburb, which has been developed into a Mall - Growel’s 101. Promoted by Ramanlal Shah and Kanchanlal Shah, as a private limited company, Grauer & Weil (India) Ltd was converted into a public limited company in Feb 1961. However, low cost products from Chinese market are the major concern in chemical business, says the brokerage. On Friday, the stock closed at Rs 15.54, up Rs 1.41, or 9.98 percent on the BSE. New Thread: 10 Best Tofu Recipes

Sim Stanley at 12:26 PM - Jan 26, 2015 ( )

10 Best Tofu RecipesA healthy substitute for cottage cheese, tofu is a great soy product loved for its health benefits and versatility. It is made from three simple ingredients - soybeans, water and a curdling agent. Fresh soy milk derived from the beans is curdled, pressed into a solid block and cooled. It is known to have originated in ancient China. According to legend, it was discovered some 2000 years ago when boiled, ground soybeans were mixed with impure sea salt, accidentally. Its taste then travelled to nearby countries of Korea and Japan. Finally, with more people turning to healthy eating it was embraced in the Western nations.

Talking about healthy eating, tofu is an excellent source of amino acids, iron and calcium. It is high in protein and low in calories. It is a valuable source of protein for vegetarians and vegans. In fact, tofu has been in the spotlight as a popular meat substitute. Some studies indicate that it can help in reducing bad cholesterol (LDL). According to the Food and Drug Association in United States, "25 grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease." Soy products have particularly known to be beneficial for women, especially during menopause, by relieving symptoms like hot flushes.

A staple ingredient in Chinese and Thai cuisines, it can now be seen adorning the Indian platter quite often. Tofu can easily take on any texture - soft, silky, crispy or golden fried. It holds a subtle flavor and can be used in both savoury as well as sweet dishes. Given its neutral taste, it has the ability to absorb different flavours and therefore it's best cooked with a variety of marinades, sauces and spices. (Giving Tofu the New Look It Deserves)

You can buy fresh or packaged tofu or even make it at home (How to make tofu at home)It remains fresh for up to a week when kept covered in water in the refrigerator. Extra firm tofu is great for bakes, grills and stir fries while soft tofu goes well in sauces, desserts and puddings. Silken tofu is one with a more creamy, melt-in-mouth texture and it is perfect for soups or dips. It is interesting to know that tofu can replace half of the fat that is required while baking a cake and this is without compromising flavor or texture, making baked goods healthier. (More About Tofu)

Newspaper uses mosquito-repelling ink and sales soar

July 7, 2014, 3:25 PM ET
SHARE:

Reading your local newspaper can save lives. No, really…..

A Sri Lankan national daily, Mawbima, is believed to have saved thousands of lives when it published a special edition recently that featured citronella in its ink. As you may know, citronella wards off insects, but in this case it kept mosquitoes away from residents of the region that spread the potentially fatal dengue fever.

Britain’s The Independent recounts how Mawbima infused the citronella into the ink, thus making every word of the edition — published on World Health Day in April — a mosquito repellent. The newspaper determined that most of its readers peruse the publication in the early morning and evening, right around the time most bites occur.

Mawbima previously experimented with posters that were printed with the special ink and posted them at bus stops, where they proved effective, and handed out citronella-laced patches to schoolchildren to wear. Then it published the mosquito-repelling newspaper.

The results: Mawbima sold all its copies by 10 a.m., which represent a sales increase of 30%. Readership increased by an estimated 300,000.

It could be the first time it was noble to be a so-called “ink-stained rat.”

New Thread: TRADING RULES MUD FRIENDS

Trading Rules For Traders 1. Forget the news, remember the chart. You’re not smart enough to know how news will affect price. The chart already knows the news is coming. 2. Buy the first pullback from a new high. Sell the first pullback from a new low. There’s always a crowd that missed the first boat. 3. Buy at support, sell at resistance. Everyone sees the same thing and they’re all just waiting to jump in the pool. 4. Short rallies not selloffs. When markets drop, shorts finally turn a profit and get ready to cover. 5. Don’t buy up into a major moving average or sell down into one. See #3. 6. Don’t chase momentum if you can’t find the exit. Assume the market will reverse the minute you get in. If it’s a long way to the door, you’re in big trouble. 7. Exhaustion gaps get filled. Breakaway and continuation gaps don’t. The old trader’s wisdom is a lie. Trade in the direction of gap support whenever you can. 8. Trends test the point of last support/resistance. Enter here even if it hurts. 9. Trade with the TICK not against it. Don’t be a hero. Go with the money flow. 10. If you have to look, it isn’t there. Forget your college degree and trust your instincts. 11. Sell the second high, buy the second low. After sharp pullsbacks, the first test of any high or low always runs into resistance. Look for the break on the third or fourth try. 12. The trend is your friend in the last hour. As volume cranks up at 3:00pm don’t expect anyone to change the channel. 13. Avoid the open. They see YOU coming sucker ! 14. 1-2-3-Drop-Up. Look for downtrends to reverse after a top, two lower highs and a double bottom. 15. Bulls live above the 200 day, bears live below. Sellers eat up rallies below this key moving average line and buyers to come to the rescue above it. 16. Price has memory. What did price do the last time it hit a certain level? Chances are it will do it again. 17. Big volume kills moves. Climax blow-offs take both buyers and sellers out of the market and lead to sideways action. 18. Trends never turn on a dime. Reversals build slowly. The first sharp dip always finds buyers and the first sharp rise always finds sellers. 19. Bottoms take longer to form than tops. Greed acts more quickly than fear and causes stocks to drop from their own weight. 20. Beat the crowd in and out the door. You have to take their money before they take yours, period.

Market Wizard Linda Raschke’s Technical Trading Rules

  1. Buy the first pullback after a new high. Sell the first rally after a new low.
  2. Afternoon strength or weakness should have follow through the next day.
  3. The best trading reversals occur in the morning, not the afternoon.
  4. The larger the market gaps, the greater the odds of continuation and a trend.
  5. The way the market trades around the previous day’s high or low is a good indicator of the market’s technical strength or weakness.
  6. The previous day’s high and low are two very important “pivot” points, for this was the definitive point where buyers or sellers came in the day before. Look for the market to either test and reverse off these points, or push through and show signs of continuation.
  7. The last hour often tells the truth about how strong a trend truly is. “Smart” money shows their hand in the last hour, continuing to mark positions in their favor. As long as a market is having consecutive strong closes, look for up-trend to continue. The up trend is most likely to end when there is a morning rally first, followed by a weak close.
  8. High volume on the close implies continuation the next morning in the direction of the last half-hour. In a strongly trending market, look for resumption of the trend in the last hour.
  9. The first hour’s range establishes the framework for the rest of the trading day.
  10. A greater percentage of the day’s range occurs in the first hour then was the case in the past, and thus it has become increasingly important to trade aggressively if there are early signs of a strong trend for the day.
  11. There are four basic principles of price behavior which have held up over time. Confidence that a type of price action is a true principle is what allows a trader to develop a systematic approach. The following four principles can be modeled and quantified and hold true for all time frames, all markets. The majority of patterns or systems that have a demonstrable edge are based on one of these four enduring principles of price behavior. Charles Dow was one of the first to touch on them in his writings.Principle One: A Trend Has a Higher Probability of Continuation than Reversal
    Principle Two: Momentum Precedes Price

Stocks could fall 15% to 20% as ‘QE fluff’ comes out of the market

Stock investors, brace yourselves for a nasty correction.

The S&P 500 SPX -0.10% could fall 15% to 20% this year as the Federal Reserve stops buying bonds, according to Peter Boockvar, chief market analyst at The Lindsey Group. Related: How to know if the stock market has reached a top

The chart above shows how the S&P 500 reacted in the periods after the Federal Reserve stopped its first two quantitative easing programs. After the Fed stopped buying bonds in March 2010, the S&P 500 dropped 16% from its highest point on April 23, 2010 to its lowest point on July 2, 2010. The second program drew to a close at the end of June 2011 and was followed by a 19% decline between July 7 and October 3 of that year.

The Fed currently buys $45 billion in Treasury and mortgage debt each month. The central bank has cut the size of its bond-buying program by $10 billion at the last four meetings as it moves to normalize monetary policy after a period of unprecedented stimulus.

“This market is being supported by Fed policy. When you take one of those crutches away, you are going to get a negative effect on the stock market,” Boockvar said in an interview.

The signs of an unraveling have already begun to show. Biotech stocks, which he says are the riskiest, peaked earlier this year. The iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF IBB -0.82% hit its highest point of the year on Feb. 25. “To me, that was the canary in the coal mine,” he said, adding that the Fed’s quantitative easing programs encourage risk taking. That has since rolled over into the performance of the Russell 2000 RUT -0.64% and high-flying stocks, he said.

External factors, such as the Greek debt crisis, also played a role in the last two stock-market declines. This time is no different, said Boockvar, pointing to the presence of “major” evaluation risks in the market.

“The stock market to me is extremely overvalued,” he said. “I still think the end result is the same, in that a lot of the QE fluff that drove the market in 2013 is going to come out in 2014.”

New Thread: Hillier Lake, or the Pink lake

Sim Stanley at 10:06 AM - Nov 07, 2013 ( )

Lake Hillier, is a lake on Middle Island, the largest of the islands and islets that make up the Recherche ArchipelagoWestern Australia.

The most notable feature of this lake is its pink colour. It is such a significant distinguishing feature of the archipelago that air passengers often take note of it. The colour is permanent, and does not alter when the water is taken in a container. The length of the lake is about six hundred metres (3/8 mile). The lake is surrounded by a rim of sand and a dense woodland of paperbark and eucalyptus trees with a narrow strip of sand dunes covered by vegetation separating it to the north from the Southern Ocean.

The island and lake are thought to have been first charted by the Flinders expedition in 1802. Captain Flinders is said to have observed the pink lake after ascending the island's peak. John Thistle, the ship's master, collected some of the lake's water, which he found to be saturated with salt.[2]Although the source of the pink colour has not been definitively proven in the case of Lake Hillier, the pink colour of other salt lakes (e.g., Pink Lake) in the region arises from a dye created by the organisms Dunaliella salina and Halobacteria. Another hypothesis is that the pink colour is due to red halophilic bacteria in the salt crusts.

Despite the unusual hue, the lake exhibits no known adverse effects upon humans. From above, the lake appears a solid bubble gum pink, but from the shoreline it appears more of a clear pink hue. The shoreline is also covered in salt crust deposits.[3]

The Dow Theory, of course, is the oldest stock market timing system that remains in widespread use today. Sell signals are generated whenever the market jumps over three hurdles:

  • Step 1: Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +1.13% and the Dow Jones Transportation Average DJT, +1.44%  must undergo a correction from new highs.
  • Step 2: In their subsequent rally attempt following that correction, either one or both must fail to rise above their pre-correction highs.
  • Step 3: Both averages must then drop below their respective correction lows.

The market cleared hurdle No. 1 in mid-October, when the S&P 500 SPX, +1.17% was as much as 9.8% below its previous high set Sept. 19. Then earlier this week, only the Dow Transports, but not the Dow Industrials, surpassed its September highs.

That focused all Dow Theorists’ eyes on the Dow Industrials. If it failed to join the Transports in its new-high territory, that would mean the market had cleared hurdle No. 2 and place the Dow Theory just one step away from declaring the bull market to be over.

With this week’s impressive market strength, especially Friday in the wake of bullish news from the Bank of Japan, a bear-market scenario appears to have been nipped in the bud.
